Keir Starmer’s Delicate Dance with Criticism and the Two-State Conundrum

Keir Starmer, known for his measured conduct compared to typical confrontational political figures, has notably refrained from harshly labeling Donald Trump despite his high-ranking position in the Labour Party. Instead of engaging in overt criticisms or inflammatory remarks, Starmer has strategically avoided naming Trump as a racist or dangerous figure, maintaining a relatively reserved stance even when public sentiment might have tempted a bolder denunciation.

In a recent session of Prime Minister’s Questions, Starmer’s reluctance to fully embrace Trump’s radical proposal regarding Palestinians became evident. While he refrained from endorsing the idea of deporting millions of Palestinians and transforming Gaza into a resort-like region, he underscored his commitment to allowing the people of Gaza the right to return home and rebuild their communities as part of a broader two-state vision.

The two-state solution, a term that has evolved over time, remains enshrouded in ambiguity with various proposals suggesting different territorial arrangements. A realistic Palestinian state would likely consist of Gaza and parts of the West Bank still under native control, though any new state might face challenges such as non-contiguity and complex boundaries drawn from historical mandates and subsequent accords.

Labour’s stance on a two-state solution lacks detailed policy blueprints, reflecting both historical reluctance and the understanding that the ultimate resolution in the region will be driven by international and regional actors. Despite some criticism both from within its own ranks and from political opponents—ranging from internal divisions over antisemitism to accusations of enabling controversial protests—the party has managed to position the two-state option as the most viable, albeit imperfect, alternative in a deeply fractured geopolitical landscape.
