Shanghai Welcomes International Tourists with Open Arms
Shanghai has witnessed a surge in international visitors following the extension of its visa-free policy to nine more countries, including South Korea. This influx has brought a vibrant atmosphere to the city's renowned commercial areas, with malls and streets bustling with consumers from South Korea, Japan, Thailand, and other Southeast Asian nations.
The Shanghai Super Brand Mall has seen a remarkable increase in foreign tourists, with numbers exceeding 30% compared to the same period in 2023. This trend is echoed at the Shanghai No 1 Shopping Center, particularly in its food chain enterprises like Long Time Ago and Haidilao. These restaurants have experienced a significant rise in international clientele, with Long Time Ago serving 100 to 150 Koreans daily and Haidilao witnessing an 80% increase in Korean customers.
The entertainment complex INS Park and the fashion label Shushu/Tong have also benefited from the influx of international tourists. INS Park has reported a 20% increase in foreign visitors since December, while Shushu/Tong has seen a 50% jump in sales, with Korean tourists accounting for 80% of its new offline customers.
To cater to the growing needs of international visitors, several malls have implemented measures such as training staff in basic foreign language skills, providing translators, and diversifying payment options. Additionally, restaurants like Haidilao have extended their operating hours to accommodate the increased demand.
Looking beyond attracting tourists, the focus lies on enhancing service quality and providing a comprehensive travel and shopping experience. During the upcoming Spring Festival, the Shanghai Super Brand Mall and Shanghai No 1 Shopping Center will host collaborative events like the Dunhuang pop-up exhibition and cultural markets, aiming to showcase the city's rich cultural heritage and attract global attention.
