A spokesperson for the Commissioner's Office of China's Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has voiced robust opposition to the recent proposal by certain US lawmakers to impose sanctions on officials, judges, and prosecutors associated with a so-called "sanctions" list. During a statement made over the weekend, the spokesperson expressed deep dissatisfaction, highlighting the progress made in Hong Kong since the introduction of the national security law, which has led to the restoration of social order and an enhanced demonstration of the rule of law.
The spokesperson pointed out that the rights and freedoms of Hong Kong residents are now fully safeguarded by law, and the region has successfully integrated into the national development framework. This has resulted in Hong Kong regaining its status as the world's freest economy and achieving high rankings as an international financial center, global competitiveness, talent competitiveness, and investment environment.
Furthermore, the rules of law were reinforced, with the spokesperson asserting that adherence to laws is critical, and any violations must incur consequences. They accused certain US politicians of ignoring the facts of good governance in Hong Kong and of perpetuating harmful narratives while threatening sanctions—actions that undermine international relations and the principles of international law.
In addition, the spokesperson noted that the "one country, two systems" framework is stable and enduring, which will not be altered by external threats or intimidation. They reassured that the rights of Hong Kong residents remain intact and warned US lawmakers to acknowledge the reality, halt their reckless actions, and cease political meddling in the affairs of Hong Kong.
In a related statement, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's government condemned these attempts by US lawmakers to intimidate those safeguarding national security within the region.
