Gong Cha Korea Manager Sparks Outrage with Insensitive Remarks
A popular Korean bubble tea brand, Gong Cha, faced severe backlash after a franchise manager's insensitive remarks to employees following a tragic plane crash. The manager allegedly instructed employees to inform him before their families in case of a plane crash, sparking outrage and accusations of inhumanity.
The incident occurred on December 29th, the same day a Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 crash landed at Muan airport, resulting in the death of 179 passengers and crew members. The manager, from a Gong Cha franchise at the Shinsegae Department Store in Daegu, allegedly told part-time workers to prioritize informing him over their families in the event of a plane crash.
This directive was met with anger and disgust on social media, with many criticizing the manager's lack of empathy and professionalism. An intern at the franchise shared the manager's message online, expressing their disappointment and urging customers to boycott Gong Cha.
In response to the controversy, Gong Cha Korea issued a formal apology, acknowledging the manager's inappropriate behavior and expressing condolences to the victims of the plane crash. The company also stated that they were taking appropriate measures against the manager and strengthening their internal management system to prevent similar incidents.
The store owner also issued a handwritten apology, taking full responsibility for the incident and vowing to improve staff training. They expressed their sincere regret for the hurt caused and pledged to regain the trust of their customers.
This incident highlights the importance of sensitivity and professionalism, especially in the wake of tragic events. It serves as a reminder for companies to ensure their employees are treated with respect and dignity, and to uphold ethical standards in all their interactions.

In a time of grief, the last thing people need is an insensitive reminder of their jobs. Shame on Gong Cha.

Let’s not forget that Gong Cha does a lot of good in the community. One manager's remarks shouldn’t overshadow that.

How tone-deaf can one person be? The lives lost in that crash deserve more respect than this.
