A court in Thailand has ruled to dismiss a case against Thaksin Shinawatra, the former prime minister, which was based on allegations of royal insult, with the decision highlighting the continuing power of the Shinawatra family in Thai politics. According to Thaksin and his legal representation, the dismissal was attributed to a lack of substantial evidence; the court confirmed the verdict, marking a significant moment for the controversial figure.
During a 2015 interview while in self-imposed exile, Thaksin was accused by a military faction loyal to the royal family of violating the stringent lese-majeste laws in Thailand. Thaksin, now 76 years old, adamantly denied any wrongdoing and has consistently expressed his loyalty to the Thai monarchy, often wearing a yellow necktie—a symbol associated with the royal family—during court appearances.
Despite his absence from official government roles, Thaksin remains an influential figure behind the ruling Pheu Thai party, led by his daughter Paetongtarn, who has encountered political challenges and declining popularity as the country faces economic issues and disputes with Cambodia. This legal ruling comes just prior to another significant verdict against Paetongtarn regarding alleged ethical violations linked to a leaked conversation with Cambodia’s past prime minister, which took place during a diplomatic crisis.
In addition, Thaksin awaits a pivotal decision from the Supreme Court concerning his previous hospital detention prior to his release on parole, as it may determine whether he will be required to serve prison time for past corruption charges. Thus, this dismissal is only one chapter in the ongoing saga surrounding the Shinawatra family and their complex relationship with Thai politics and law.

I'm glad to see that the court recognized the lack of credible evidence. We need fairness in the judicial system.

The military faction may have their flaws, but justice should not be compromised for political families.

Let’s hope this ruling leads to more constructive dialogue in Thai politics, rather than division.

Thaksin’s dismissal is infuriating! It feels like a slap in the face to those who believe in accountability.

Political influence and money can clearly sway court decisions in Thailand. This is unacceptable.
