In the remote Nizhuhe village of Xuanwei, Yunnan province, children previously faced a daunting daily trek just to reach school. Nestled at the base of a steep canyon, students would spend over three hours climbing rugged paths and crossing rivers, a perilous start to their school day.
However, recent developments have dramatically improved this situation. With the establishment of the Nizhuhe Grand Canyon scenic area, a convenient "aerial school bus" system was implemented in 2022. Students now take a short ride in a 268-meter elevator, followed by a cable car and a bus to their school, Guanzhai Primary, transforming what was once a grueling hike into a pleasant 30-minute journey.
The project began in 2017 and, thanks to various infrastructure improvements, the elevation from the village to the school was made more accessible. Zhao Suzhen, a villager and mother, recalls how previously villagers had to create footholds in the cliffs and use chains to assist in the daunting climb. Her sons, Lei Xin and his brother, now approach their daily commutes with excitement, enjoying the scenic view as they ascend.
Local officials, including Yang Jie, the Party secretary of the township, recognize the significant changes that have occurred over the years. She reflects on the hardships faced by past generations and her journey to improve the route to school. Initial attempts to create walkways proved challenging, but with collective efforts and investments, safety became a priority, leading to the construction of metal railings and cleared paths.
