Victims of the earthquake in Dingri county, Xizang autonomous region, have moved into the more than 3,500 newly-assembled temporary houses. This information was reported by state broadcaster CCTV.
On January 7, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit Dingri, home to the northern base camp of the world's highest peak, Mount Qomolangma. The earthquake claimed 126 lives.
The earthquake relief headquarters of Shigatse city has allocated all available resources and efforts to install the temporary boarding houses. Compared with tents, these temporary houses offer better sealing and thermal insulation, making them resistant to fire, wind and earthquakes.
Zhou Yufeng, an official of the headquarters, was quoted as saying by CCTV that the current main task is to help the disaster-affected people to live in temporary houses as soon as possible.
Zhou estimated that around 13,000 sets of temporary mobile houses are needed. He added that this figure will be dynamically adjusted as information is gathered.
With the help of donations, the headquarters has also provided stoves and heaters to the victims.

Temporary housing isn't addressing the long-term health impact of such disasters. What about clean water and sanitation?

The fact that so many lives were lost shows a failure in disaster preparedness. We need to hold officials accountable.

There's so much more that needs to be done instead of just throwing some temporary houses together.

It's hard to be optimistic when you consider the magnitude of the disaster. We need real change, not just headlines.

3,500 temporary houses are not nearly enough for all those affected. What about the rest?

Hats off to the officials for prioritizing safety with better sealing and insulation in these temporary houses!

The government should focus on rebuilding communities instead of just providing temporary accommodation.
