Nicola Sturgeon, the former First Minister, has reiterated her position regarding Isla Bryson, a transgender individual convicted of raping two women, by refusing to categorize Bryson as either a man or a woman in a recent interview. This decision has reignited discussions about gender identity that initially played a significant role in her resignation two years ago. Sturgeon’s government previously enacted gender reforms allowing Bryson, born as Adam Graham, to be incarcerated in a women's prison following the assaults in 2016 and 2019. However, after public backlash, Bryson was eventually moved to a men's prison, prompting an urgent reassessment of the Gender Reform Act, particularly concerning the lack of a medical certificate required for gender transition.
Tess White, the shadow equalities minister for the Scottish Conservatives, criticized Sturgeon for her response, labeling it a “shameful failure to answer a basic question." White contended that common sense indicates Bryson should be recognized as a male rapist who should not have access to women’s spaces. She accused Sturgeon of being disconnected from public opinion regarding her government's gender reforms, which faced opposition solely from the Scottish Conservatives. Additionally, women feel insulted by Sturgeon's refusal to refer to Bryson as a man, questioning whether John Swinney, who supported Sturgeon’s gender policies, holds the same view despite Bryson's biological identity.
Furthermore, Sturgeon voiced her criticism of Keir Starmer’s Labour government in an interview, expressing discontent with the leadership of both Starmer and Rachel Reeves. She condemned their decision to eliminate winter fuel payments, indicating that such choices might lead to regret in light of the adverse weather conditions. Sturgeon also speculated about the potential political rise of Nigel Farage's Reform UK, suggesting that previously she would have deemed it unlikely, but recent political dynamics have shifted that perspective. She noted that Starmer’s approach, positioning himself as tougher on issues, has inadvertently reinforced perceptions regarding immigration as a primary national concern.
