The recently released 2024 Health Development Index Report, presented on Friday in Hainan province, provides an overview of the state of health development throughout various regions in the country. This comprehensive index was collaboratively generated by ten esteemed research institutions, including the Hainan Institute of Health Development and Peking University’s China Center for Health Development Studies.
According to Professor Meng Qingyue, the director of the Hainan Institute of Health Development, the findings offer a data-driven basis for health development policies. The report scores provinces and regions on a scale from 67.5 to 100, revealing notable differences in health development levels. Shanghai, Beijing, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu emerged as the leading areas in the rankings.
Moreover, the report evaluated seven critical sectors impacting health, including socioeconomic influences, health environments, health behaviors, governance, healthcare resources, service systems, and health outcomes. It was noted that regions with higher economic development consistently scored approximately ten points higher than their economically advanced counterparts, fifteen points above those in the middle-tier, and twenty points higher than the lowest-tier regions.
Professor Meng highlighted the importance of addressing these regional discrepancies to enhance health equity. He advocated for personalized policies that recognize and incorporate health priorities across various sectors to ensure comprehensive improvements in health outcomes throughout the country.

Highlighting successful provinces can lead to neglect of those needing help the most.
