Recently, Vietnam hosted an international defense expo, attracting major players in the arms industry as part of its strategy to reduce dependence on Russian military supplies. This significant event saw participation from over 200 companies spanning 30 nations, which included China, Russia, the United States, Iran, Israel, and India, and concluded on December 22.
The Vietnamese defense ministry reported that local businesses secured contracts worth more than $286 million, marking a substantial increase from the previous year's expo. A total of seventeen cooperation agreements were established, which not only highlight the business opportunities but also reflect Vietnam's diplomatic efforts, according to Nguyen Khac Giang from Singapore's ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. He noted that the expo symbolizes Vietnam's openness to forming partnerships with diverse countries, thereby enhancing its international relations amid tensions between some participating nations like Iran and Israel, as well as the U.S. and China.

This expo feels like a step backward. Shouldn't we be prioritizing diplomacy over militarization?
