Malaysia Airlines has decided to take its recently delivered Airbus A330neo out of service just days following its inaugural flight, which took place on December 19 from Kuala Lumpur to Melbourne. The decision was prompted by technical problems that reportedly originated from the aircraft's manufacturing, raising concerns about the airline's reputation.
In comments to local media, CEO Izham Ismail expressed his disappointment regarding the technical faults, describing them as "unacceptable" and stressing that he would never compromise on safety standards. The airline has encountered multiple operational difficulties throughout the year, including a reduction in routes and various manpower challenges. As part of its efforts to modernize its fleet, Malaysia Airlines had previously ordered a total of 20 Airbus A330neo planes in 2022, which are recognized for their fuel efficiency due to their Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines.
Ismail has called for both Airbus and Rolls-Royce to thoroughly investigate the issues affecting the new aircraft. A representative from Rolls-Royce acknowledged the existence of a faulty component, while Airbus has offered its support to Malaysia Airlines in resolving these challenges.
