The Calgary Stampeders have officially announced the acquisition of quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. from the B.C. Lions. In this trade, Calgary not only got Adams but also secured a fourth-round selection (32nd overall) in the 2025 CFL draft and a third-round pick in 2026. Conversely, the Lions will receive the Stampeders’ second and fourth-round picks (9th and 29th overall) in 2025, along with a second-round pick in 2026.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Adams stated he is thrilled to join the Stampeders, recalling his desire to play for head coach and general manager Dave Dickenson and to be part of an organization renowned for its significant history and culture. He also mentioned his excitement about reuniting with quarterbacks coach Beau Baldwin, who previously coached him for three years at Eastern Washington University.
This trade not only clarifies the quarterback situation for B.C. but also introduces Adams as a seasoned player to lead Calgary's offense as they aim to recover from a disappointing 2024 season. Incoming Lions GM Ryan Rigmaiden expressed gratitude for Adams's contributions over the past three years in a statement, highlighting his professionalism on and off the field.
Adams had shown promising performance early in the previous season before facing a knee injury during an August loss to Winnipeg. After Adams's recovery, B.C. decided to stick with Nathan Rourke as their starting quarterback, even as Adams returned to lead the team in their final game of the season and the West Division semi-final loss to Saskatchewan.
In 2024, Adams maintained a 6-3 record as a starter with the Lions, completing 197 of 302 passes for 2,929 yards and 16 touchdowns for the season. The Californian quarterback has a strong overall record of 38 wins and 22 losses as a starter, with impressive career statistics that include 6,190 passing yards, 96 touchdowns, and 1,644 rushing yards with 24 touchdowns over eight seasons with B.C., Montreal, and Saskatchewan.
Dickenson expressed excitement over acquiring Adams, recognizing him as a dynamic player and great leader who can bring significant talent to the team. The Stampeders, having struggled through the last season with a 5-12-1 record and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2004, anticipate Adams's impact as they look to rebuild their offense.
