Ms. Cheng, a former accounting clerk, decided to switch careers at the age of 55. Inspired by her experience assisting doctors at the Singapore General Hospital, she enrolled in a two-year nursing course at the Institute of Technical Education. Despite feeling out of place among the younger students, she enjoyed their energy and felt rejuvenated by their presence.
During her studies, Ms. Cheng witnessed the death of a young construction worker, an experience that deeply impacted her and solidified her commitment to life. Her first few months as a nurse were stressful and hectic, but she persevered with the mantra "just keep moving."
Ms. Cheng was later offered a position at Jurong Community Hospital, where she worked until the COVID-19 pandemic. At the age of 64, she was transferred to the COVID-19 ward, where she cared for infected patients despite her own concerns about getting infected. She felt a strong sense of responsibility and was supported by her daughter throughout this challenging time.
