The warm weather trend in the United Kingdom is set to persist, as forecasts indicate that temperatures could soar to 31C in various regions, particularly in southern and central England, starting August 1. The rise in temperature is attributed to warm air from southwestern Europe moving into the area. Cities like Birmingham, Gloucester, and Reading are expected to experience these higher temperatures, while London, Southampton, and Brighton will also feel the effects of what is being referred to as the Iberian plume, signaling the possibility of the fourth heatwave the UK has seen this year.
As the forecast suggests, these elevated temperatures will likely continue for the first few days of August, with southern England facing highs around 30C on August 3. The previous heatwave peaked at 33C on July 12, prompting officials to issue health alerts due to the increased risks for vulnerable populations, particularly those over 65 and those with pre-existing health issues. Despite the ongoing warmth, weather warnings have been released for heavy rain and thunderstorms in parts of southwest England, Wales, and Scotland, which will be in effect until the following Monday evening.
Looking ahead, the Met Office anticipates a "changeable" first half of August, with overall temperatures expected to remain near or above average, alongside the potential for additional warm spells, particularly in the southern and eastern regions. A spokesperson from the Met Office mentioned that there is a possibility of high-pressure systems from the southwest influencing UK weather, potentially leading to more dry and settled conditions as August progresses.

This ongoing heat is only going to worsen air quality and increase energy costs for cooling. Are we really okay with this?
