Significant updates to the Disability Benefits assessments are on the horizon, as the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) prepares to introduce new providers overseeing the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) evaluations beginning in September. Under the new system, a single provider will be responsible for all benefits that involve a functional health assessment in a specific region, eliminating the need for multiple companies to conduct PIP assessments along with Work Capability Assessments for Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and Universal Credit.
While the DWP assures that these alterations will not drastically change the assessment process, critics express concerns over the potential stress and anxiety this may cause for claimants. Notably, face-to-face appointments will continue to be accessible within a 90-minute public transport distance from a claimant’s residence, with assessments required to take place in ground-floor locations that are easily reachable for everyone.
As previously practiced, claimants can bring a companion to their assessment, who can assist in providing evidence. Furthermore, the new agreements stipulate that only qualified professionals such as therapists, nurses, physiotherapists, and doctors will be authorized to conduct these assessments, including paramedics for PIP evaluations. These modifications arrive at a time when many PIP claimants are awaiting back payments averaged at £5,000 from the DWP following a Supreme Court decision that mandated a review of specific claims due to adjusted assessment criteria.
