New Defensive Measures Announced
The United Kingdom has officially expanded its military support for Saudi Arabia in response to a surge in missile and drone strikes by Houthi rebels. Defense Secretary Wes Streeting announced on Tuesday that the Royal Air Force (RAF) will begin conducting defensive air patrols to bolster the security of the kingdom. These operations are specifically designed to safeguard Saudi cities, civilian populations, and critical national infrastructure from ongoing aerial threats.
Operational Scope and Limitations
Under the new directive, RAF Typhoon jets will be deployed to perform defensive counter-air operations. While these aircraft are tasked with intercepting and neutralizing incoming missiles and drones, the British government has been clear regarding the limitations of the mission. Streeting emphasized that the British planes will not engage in offensive strikes against Houthi targets on the ground, maintaining a strictly defensive posture.
Additional Support and Regional Context
In addition to the deployment of fighter jets, the UK is increasing its logistical and advisory presence in the region. The support package includes:
- The deployment of a military transport plane to assist with operations.
- The dispatch of an unspecified number of military advisers to provide strategic support.
- An extension of the existing in-air refueling mission for Saudi aircraft, which has been prolonged for an additional 90 days.
Government Stance on the Conflict
Despite the expansion of military assistance, the UK government has reiterated its position that there is no long-term military solution to the conflict in Yemen. The move comes as Saudi Arabia has sought support from various international allies, including France, Pakistan, and Egypt, to enhance its air-defense capabilities against persistent threats from Iran-backed groups.
