European Central Bank Unveils Shortlisted Themes for Future Euro Banknotes

The Redesign Process

The European Central Bank (ECB) has officially moved forward with its initiative to redesign the euro banknotes. This process, which began in 2021, aims to develop a new series of notes that resonate more deeply with Europeans of all ages and backgrounds. The decision to update the currency follows extensive public consultation, where thousands of citizens across the eurozone, including those in Italy, provided input on potential themes.

Selected Themes for Future Currency

After reviewing proposals from an advisory group and public feedback, the ECB Governing Council selected two primary themes for the future banknotes. These themes are designed to reflect the shared identity and natural heritage of the continent:

  • European Culture: This theme emphasizes the shared cultural heritage and values that unite European nations.
  • Rivers and Birds: This theme highlights the biodiversity of Europe, focusing on the natural environment that transcends national borders.

ECB President Christine Lagarde noted that the new designs will aim to ensure that the banknotes remain a symbol of European unity. She stated, 'We want to develop euro banknotes that European citizens can identify with and will be proud to use as their money.'

Next Steps in Development

With the themes now selected, the next phase involves a design competition. Artists and designers will be invited to submit proposals based on these chosen concepts. A design competition jury will then review the submissions before the ECB conducts another round of public consultation. The final decision on the new designs is expected to be made by the Governing Council in 2026. Once the designs are finalized, the ECB will determine the timeline for the production and issuance of the new banknotes, ensuring a smooth transition for all member states.

Context and Public Engagement

The current euro banknotes, which feature architectural styles from different periods of European history, have been in circulation since 2002. The move to update them is part of a broader strategy to modernize the currency and address security requirements. By involving the public in the selection process, the ECB seeks to strengthen the connection between the currency and the people who use it daily.
