Niue Hosted Previous Summit in 2024
The decision to hold the 8th Pacific Media Summit in Savusavu follows Fiji's successful bid during the 7th Pacific Media Summit, which took place in Niue in September 2024. The 7th summit, held from September 21-26, 2024, was organized by PINA, the Niue Media Association, and the Government of Niue. It gathered approximately 80 media delegates from over 10 Pacific Island countries.
Niue's Prime Minister Dalton Tagelagi officially opened the 7th summit, which was themed 'Charting a Resilient Future: Pacific Media Navigating Press Freedoms, AI & Geopolitical Interests'. Discussions in Niue focused on media resilience, the impact of artificial intelligence, safeguarding press freedoms, climate change, and journalistic independence. The event also coincided with Niue's 50th anniversary of self-governance.
PINA's Enduring Role in Pacific Media
The Pacific Media Summit is a biennial event, underscoring PINA's role as the premier regional organization for media professionals. PINA connects radio, television, newspapers, magazines, online services, national associations, and journalism schools across 23 Pacific island countries. Established with its first formal founding meeting in September 1974, PINA's headquarters are located in Suva, Fiji.

Addressing press freedom and climate reporting is absolutely vital for the region's future. Yet, without stronger legal frameworks and protection for journalists, these discussions might remain theoretical for many practitioners.
