Mexican Security Forces Kill Cartel Leader 'El Mencho' with US Intelligence Aid

Cartel Kingpin 'El Mencho' Killed in Joint Operation

Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as 'El Mencho' and the elusive leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was killed on Sunday, February 22, 2026, during a military operation conducted by Mexican Special Forces. The operation, which took place in Tapalpa, Jalisco state, reportedly received crucial intelligence support from the United States.

Mexican defense officials confirmed that Oseguera Cervantes was wounded during the raid and subsequently died while being airlifted to Mexico City for medical attention. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated that US intelligence provided 'support to the Mexican government' for the operation, while US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau praised the development as 'a great development for Mexico, the US, Latin America, and the world.'

Widespread Retaliatory Violence Follows Death

The killing of 'El Mencho' immediately ignited a wave of retaliatory violence orchestrated by CJNG loyalists across at least eight Mexican states, including Jalisco, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Nayarit, Colima, Guerrero, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas. Cartel members erected numerous roadblocks using burning vehicles, torched businesses, and engaged in armed clashes with security forces.

The unrest led to significant disruptions, particularly in Jalisco, where flights to popular tourist destinations like Puerto Vallarta and the state capital, Guadalajara, were canceled. Authorities in affected areas urged residents to shelter in place, and schools were canceled in several states for Monday.

Casualties and Cartel's Reach

The operation itself resulted in the deaths of four cartel members at the scene, with three others, including Oseguera Cervantes, succumbing to their injuries during evacuation. Additionally, two cartel members were arrested, and a cache of weapons, including armored vehicles and rocket launchers, was seized. Tragically, the violence extended to security forces, with at least seven National Guard members killed in Tapalpa and Zapopan, a jail guard in Puerto Vallarta, and an agent from the Jalisco state prosecutor's office in Guadalajara.

'El Mencho' was one of the most sought-after criminal figures by both Mexican and US authorities, with bounties reaching up to US$15 million and MXN$300 million respectively for information leading to his capture. The CJNG, under his leadership, had grown into one of Mexico's most formidable and brutal criminal organizations, responsible for trafficking vast quantities of illicit drugs, including fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamine, into the United States and other international markets.

Implications for Regional Security

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum acknowledged the widespread violence but affirmed 'absolute coordination' with state governments to manage the situation. The US had previously designated the CJNG as a foreign terrorist organization in February 2025, underscoring the cartel's significant threat. While 'El Mencho's' death marks a significant blow to organized crime, security experts warn that such events can sometimes lead to internal power struggles and increased violence as factions vie for control.

It's good to see international cooperation in targeting major crime figures, but the article clearly shows the high human cost. We need to question if these high-profile kills truly solve the underlying issues or just shift the problem.

This operation successfully eliminated a notorious criminal, which is a positive development for security. Yet, the warning from experts about potential power struggles and increased violence suggests that this might be just the beginning of a new, equally dangerous chapter.
