Deadly Attack Rocks Kebbi State
An armed group, identified as suspected Lakurawa militants, launched simultaneous attacks on the Biu community in the Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State, Nigeria, on Wednesday, February 18, 2026. The coordinated assaults resulted in the deaths of at least 33 people, as confirmed by the Kebbi State Police Command.
Police spokesperson Bashir Usman stated that preliminary investigations indicate the assailants crossed into the district from the Gudu Local Government Area of neighboring Sokoto State. The militants' primary objective was believed to be cattle rustling. Residents from several communities, including Mamunu, Awasaka, Tungan Tsoho, Makangara, Kanzo, Gorun Naidal, and Dan Mai Ago, mobilized to confront the attackers, leading to a fatal confrontation.
The Lakurawa Group and Regional Insecurity
The Lakurawa group is described as an insurgent or terrorist organization operating in northwestern Nigeria, particularly in Kebbi and Sokoto states. They are known for engaging in activities such as cattle rustling, raids on villages, and kidnappings for ransom. Some reports suggest the group may be linked to the Islamic State (IS) or represent a partnership between terrorists and bandits.
This attack underscores the complex and escalating security crisis gripping northern Nigeria, which faces threats from both Islamic militants and armed criminal gangs. The region has experienced a series of deadly incidents, including a recent attack in Kwara State in early February 2026 that claimed over 100 lives.
Response and Ongoing Efforts
Following the attacks, security personnel, including the police, military, and local militias, were immediately deployed to the affected areas to restore calm and maintain order. The Kebbi State Police Command has reinforced its presence, deploying additional personnel and operational assets, and conducting area domination patrols to prevent further violence. The Kebbi State Government has also pledged stronger border security measures in collaboration with the Federal Government and security agencies.
The incident has triggered widespread panic, with many residents fleeing their homes. Authorities have urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing credible intelligence on suspicious movements. The broader context of insecurity has also seen international involvement, with the United States deploying troops to Nigeria to assist in training its military in counterterrorism operations.

Heartbreaking news. My thoughts are with the victims and their families in Kebbi.

Same old story. Security agencies always 'reinforce' after tragedy strikes. Too little, too late.

The US training is a positive step. Hope it helps bring stability to the region.

International support is welcome, but it's crucial that local authorities take primary responsibility and show genuine commitment to protecting their citizens. Relying solely on external aid won't solve internal security failures.
