Four Charged in Shooting of Former NRL Star Matt Utai Amid Sydney Gang Conflict

Charges Laid Following Brazen Attack on Former NRL Star

Four individuals have been charged by New South Wales Police in connection with the shooting of former National Rugby League (NRL) star Matt Utai outside his Greenacre home in Sydney's southwest. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday morning, February 17, 2026, left the 44-year-old premiership-winning winger with serious injuries. Police have described the shooting as a 'brazen ambush' and a 'targeted attack', believed to be linked to escalating gang conflict in the region.

Details of the Shooting and Utai's Condition

Emergency services were called to Macquarie Street, Greenacre, shortly after 6 am on Tuesday, following reports of a public place shooting. Utai, a celebrated player for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and Wests Tigers, was about to drive to work when he was shot multiple times. He sustained wounds to his leg and upper body/chest/shoulder area and underwent emergency surgery. Despite his injuries, Utai was able to speak with arriving police officers. The attackers fled the scene in an SUV, which was later discovered burned out on Samuel Street in Wiley Park. Police believe Utai may not have been the intended target, suggesting a case of mistaken identity.

Arrests and Specific Charges

The arrests followed extensive investigations by the NSW Police Raptor Squad's Strike Force Halesowen, which executed six search warrants across Sydney's southwest and western suburbs. The four individuals charged are:

  • A 19-year-old man, arrested in Guildford, accused of picking up the gunman after the shooting. He faces charges including being an accessory after the fact to a shooting with intent to murder, participating in a criminal group, and a drug charge after 1kg of cocaine was allegedly found at his residence.
  • A 16-year-old boy, arrested in Auburn, who police allege handled the gun used in the attack. He has been charged with being an accessory after the fact to a shooting with intent to murder, supplying a pistol to a person unauthorised to possess it, and participating in a criminal group.
  • An 18-year-old man, arrested in Riverwood, charged with damaging property by fire and participating in a criminal group, in connection with a firebombing in Guildford West.
  • Another 19-year-old man, charged with participating in a criminal group related to the firebombing and commercial quantity drug supply, also linked to the discovery of 1kg of cocaine.

The 19-year-old and 16-year-old were refused bail and were scheduled to appear in court on Friday, February 20, 2026. The 18-year-old was granted bail to appear in court on March 10. The individual who fired the shots at Utai remains at large.

Underworld Connections and Related Incidents

Police have linked the shooting to Utai's son, Iziah Utai, 24, and his alleged criminal associations and escalating gang conflict. Iziah Utai is believed to be connected to a group known as the 'Coconut Cartel', which police suggest is in conflict with the Alameddine crime family. The shooting of Matt Utai is part of a series of related incidents targeting the Utai family, including a home being shot at in outer western Sydney and a firebombing in Guildford West. Police are also investigating 'overseas masterminds' believed to be orchestrating these attacks.

My heart goes out to Matt Utai and his family. A true legend doesn't deserve this.

While it's positive that arrests have been made by the police, the fact that the actual shooter is still at large is concerning. This indicates a deeper issue within the gang structure that needs to be dismantled.

Arresting young kids won't solve the real problem. The root causes need addressing.
