Accelerated Digital Transformation Underway
South Africa is significantly advancing its digital transformation agenda with the accelerated rollout of a national digital identity system and the expansion of Smart ID and passport services to numerous bank branches across the country. This initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA), aims to streamline government services, combat identity fraud, and enhance accessibility for all citizens. President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the 2026 rollout of the digital identity system during his State of the Nation Address on Thursday, February 12, 2026. Home Affairs Minister Dr. Leon Schreiber further elaborated on these plans during a parliamentary debate on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, stating that the department is intensifying efforts to improve service delivery and eliminate long queues.
Key Features and Benefits of the New System
The new digital ID system is set to revolutionize how South Africans interact with government services. It will form a core component of the government's unified digital services platform, MyMzansi. Key benefits and features include:
- Digital Documents: Citizens will be able to access digital versions of essential documents, including IDs and passports, directly on their mobile phones.
- Online Services: The system will enable online access to various government services, such as digitizing driver's licenses, matric certificates, and allowing citizens to file police statements online.
- Reduced Queues and Fraud: A primary goal is to significantly reduce waiting times at Home Affairs offices and eliminate identity fraud, replacing the vulnerable traditional green ID book with a more secure alternative.
- Improved Accessibility: The expansion aims to make services more accessible, particularly for those in rural and underserved areas, by leveraging existing bank infrastructure.
- Faster Processing: Reforms to the online verification service and internal system upgrades have already cut turnaround times for Smart ID and passport applications by 66.7% in 2025, with applications potentially taking as little as three minutes at bank branches.
- Remote Verification: The digital ID will support remote identity verification using secure facial recognition technology.
Expansion of Smart ID Services at Bank Branches
A significant part of the rollout involves expanding the partnership between the DHA and major South African banks. Currently, approximately 35 bank branches offer Smart ID and passport services. The DHA aims to expand this to 100 new branches by the end of March 2026, with a long-term target of over 1,000 bank branches by 2029. Participating banks include Standard Bank, Absa, Capitec Bank, FNB, Investec, Nedbank, Discovery Bank, TymeBank, and African Bank. Standard Bank has announced the launch of 20 additional branches for these services in early 2026, starting with its Rosebank, Maponya Mall, and Westgate branches in Gauteng. Capitec plans to activate the service in 100 branches by mid-2026, expanding to approximately 300 by the end of the year. At these participating bank branches, citizens can apply for or renew Smart ID cards, complete payments, and collect their documents, significantly reducing the need for visits to traditional Home Affairs offices.
Broader Digital Transformation Goals
The digital ID initiative is a crucial step in South Africa's broader vision to transform how its citizens interact with the government, moving from manual to digital solutions. The system is designed to be a foundational element for a thriving digital economy, enabling secure online transactions and fostering innovation. While the digital ID will facilitate remote access to services, Minister Schreiber noted that secure physical documents, such as the Smart ID card and passport, will remain important. The rollout of the digital ID system in 2026 is expected to be a major milestone in the country's development strategy under the Medium-Term Development Plan (MTDP) 2024–2029.

Digitizing essential documents like driver's licenses is a smart step towards modernization, but the government must ensure the system is truly inclusive and doesn't marginalize citizens in remote or underserved areas.
