Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis Highlights Greece's Strategic AI Role at India AI Impact Summit 2026

Mitsotakis Attends Landmark India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis participated in the India AI Impact Summit 2026, held in New Delhi from February 18-19, 2026. His attendance underscored Greece's commitment to shaping global artificial intelligence dialogue and its strategic importance on the international stage. The summit, which ran overall from February 16 to 21, 2026, at the Bharat Mandapam, marked the first global AI summit hosted in the Global South.

Greece's Vision for Inclusive AI Development

During his address at the summit, Prime Minister Mitsotakis characterized the rise of Artificial Intelligence as a 'civilizational shift' rather than merely a technological one. He stressed the critical need to ensure that the 'AI Dividend' is broadly shared, benefiting all segments of society, including 'the farmer, the nurse, and the teacher,' rather than being concentrated among a few tech giants. Mitsotakis voiced concerns regarding the concentration of power in AI within a limited number of global corporations and highlighted the importance of addressing labor displacement and reskilling initiatives promptly. He also warned against 'digital addiction' and online harm, particularly for younger generations, stating that 'Protecting minors is a matter of intergenerational solidarity.'

Strengthening Bilateral Ties and Economic Corridors

On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Mitsotakis held a significant bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The leaders reviewed the comprehensive strategic partnership between Greece and India, noting its steady growth across various sectors. Mitsotakis reiterated Greece's ambition to serve as India's 'Gateway to Europe' through its strategic ports and expressed Greece's willingness to participate in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). Discussions also covered the EU-India Free Trade Agreement, with Mitsotakis highlighting opportunities for high-quality Greek agri-food products, such as olive oil and kiwifruit, in the Indian market.

Engagements with Global Tech Leaders

Prime Minister Mitsotakis's agenda included scheduled meetings with prominent figures in the technology sector. These included Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind; Brad Smith, Vice-Chair and President of Microsoft; Mati Staniszewski, CEO of ElevenLabs; Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI; and Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral AI. These engagements aimed to foster dialogue on the ethical development and responsible deployment of AI technologies, aligning with Greece's strategic positioning as a bridge between Europe and the Global South in the evolving AI landscape.

While the PM is abroad talking AI, domestic issues like inflation and unemployment are being ignored. Priorities are skewed.

An 'AI Dividend for all' is just political rhetoric. Tech giants will always come first.

Strengthening ties with India and aiming for the IMEC is a strategic masterstroke for Greece's future.

Strengthening bilateral ties with India and exploring economic corridors like IMEC holds significant potential for Greece's trade. Nevertheless, Greece must carefully navigate these partnerships to avoid becoming merely a transit point and ensure its own industries genuinely benefit.

Greece as India's 'Gateway to Europe'? Sounds like wishful thinking, given our infrastructure.
