SVR Issues Warning on Destabilization Efforts
The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) announced on Monday, February 9, 2026, that it has intelligence indicating Western non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are preparing a 'color revolution' in Belarus. According to the SVR, these organizations are accumulating resources and capabilities to destabilize the country and bring about a change in its constitutional order.
The SVR's statement, reported by Russian news agencies, specifically named 'democratizing' organizations, agencies, and foundations from the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, and other European nations as being involved in these alleged efforts.
Aims and Methods of the Alleged Plot
The primary objectives of the purported 'color revolution' are to undermine stability in Belarus and to weaken the strategic alliance between Minsk and Moscow within the framework of the Union State.
The SVR claims that Western actors plan to:
- Conduct a thorough 'inventory' of Belarusian opposition members to assess their potential for 'subversive activities'.
- Identify and cultivate new 'liberal passionaries' or 'embittered opposition figures' within Belarusian society.
- Form a resource pool with a focus on influencing the 2030 presidential election in Belarus.
The Russian intelligence agency also suggested that the West hopes to hinder Russia's ability to achieve its goals in the ongoing special military operation.
SVR's Assessment of Belarusian Resilience
Despite these alleged preparations, the SVR expressed skepticism about the success of such an undertaking. The intelligence service believes that the West 'overlooks one important detail': Belarusian society has developed a 'strong immunity' against attempts to destabilize the country following the events of 2020.
The SVR statement highlighted that Belarusians have witnessed the consequences in other nations, such as Ukraine and Moldova, which they claim were 'destroyed in the name of advancing Western geopolitical ambitions under the guise of false slogans about defending democracy and human rights.'
Furthermore, the SVR noted that prominent figures from the 2020 protests, such as Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who are currently based in Lithuania and Poland, have 'demonstrated in the past years an absolute inability to influence political processes in their home nation in any way.'
Historical Context of 'Color Revolution' Warnings
This is not the first time Russian intelligence has issued warnings regarding alleged Western attempts to instigate 'color revolutions' in post-Soviet states. Sergei Naryshkin, the Director of the SVR, has previously accused the West of orchestrating similar scenarios in countries like Georgia and Ukraine.
Russian officials have consistently characterized 'color revolutions' as a new form of warfare aimed at destabilizing states from within by exploiting internal dissent.

So, demanding democracy is now a 'plot'? Ridiculous.

This is just another attempt by the West to control independent nations.

Accusations of 'color revolutions' are common, yet suppressing all dissent under this label risks ignoring legitimate calls for reform within a country. There's a fine line between foreign meddling and domestic aspirations.

The 2020 protests showed real public sentiment, so while external influence may exist, framing all future movements as a foreign plot is an oversimplification. Both internal and external factors likely play a role.

Calling people wanting change a 'color revolution' is just authoritarian fear-mongering.
