Trump Lashes Out at Olympic Skier
Former President Donald Trump took to his Truth Social platform on Sunday, February 8, 2026, to criticize Team USA freestyle skier Hunter Hess. Trump's remarks came after Hess and other American athletes competing at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, Italy, voiced their opinions on the political climate in the United States.
In his post, Trump stated, 'U.S. Olympic Skier, Hunter Hess, a real Loser, says he doesn't represent his Country in the current Winter Olympics. If that's the case, he shouldn't have tried out for the Team, and it's too bad he's on it. Very hard to root for someone like this. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!'
Athletes Express 'Mixed Emotions'
The controversy began after a press conference on Friday, February 7, where Hunter Hess, a 27-year-old two-time X Games bronze medalist, was asked about representing the U.S. amidst domestic political tensions. Hess responded, 'I think it brings up mixed emotions to represent the U.S. right now, I think. It's a little hard. There's obviously a lot going on that I'm not the biggest fan of, and I think a lot of people aren't.' He further clarified his stance, saying, 'Just because I'm wearing the flag doesn't mean I represent everything that's going on in the U.S.'
Hess emphasized that his representation was for 'my friends and my family and the people that supported me getting here,' and that he would represent the country 'if it aligns with my moral values.'
Broader Athlete Commentary and Reactions
Hess was not the only American Olympian to comment on U.S. politics. Fellow freestyle skier Chris Lillis, a 2022 Olympic gold medalist, expressed being 'heartbroken' over events in the United States, specifically referencing immigration enforcement actions. Figure skater Amber Glenn also spoke out, stating, 'Politics affects us all. It is something I will not just be quiet about.' Even decorated skier Mikaela Shiffrin shared thoughts on representing values of inclusivity and compassion.
The athletes' comments drew swift condemnation from various figures. Prior to Trump's statement, conservative politicians had already criticized the remarks. YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul and former Fox News personality Megyn Kelly also publicly denounced the athletes. Notably, Vice President JD Vance, who was present in Italy for the Olympics, was reportedly booed at the opening ceremony in Milan.
Olympic Committee Stance
While the International Olympic Committee (IOC) traditionally advocates for the games to remain apolitical, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) guidelines permit athletes to express themselves. The ongoing discussions highlight the intersection of sports, national representation, and political discourse on the international stage. Hess is scheduled to compete in the men's freeski halfpipe on February 19.

It's brave of Hess to be honest. Patriotism isn't blind loyalty.

It's understandable that athletes feel conflicted given current events, as they are individuals with consciences. However, the optics of criticizing your home country while representing it on a global stage are always going to be challenging.

He's wearing the flag. That means he represents the country, period.

Free speech is for everyone, even Olympic athletes. Trump is just being a bully.
