Final Group of Abducted Christians Regain Freedom in Kaduna
The remaining 89 Christians who were abducted from three churches in Kaduna State, Nigeria, on January 18, 2026, have been released. This brings the total number of individuals freed to 183, marking the full release of all those initially taken captive. The victims were received by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, who confirmed that all abductees from Kurmin Wali have now returned.
Details of the Abduction
The mass abduction occurred on Sunday, January 18, 2026, when armed assailants stormed three churches in the Kurmin Wali community, located in the Kajuru Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State, during Sunday services. Initial reports indicated that approximately 177 to 183 worshippers were seized and marched into nearby forest hideouts. The churches involved included the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) and the Cherubim and Seraphim Church.
Phased Release and Recovery
The release of the abducted individuals occurred in stages over several weeks. Initially, 11 people were released and immediately received medical attention. Subsequently, 83 others managed to escape captivity and returned home. The final group of 89 hostages was released early on Thursday, February 5, 2026, concluding the ordeal for all those abducted. Governor Uba Sani confirmed the total figure of 183 abducted persons had been rescued, emphasizing that no one was left behind.
Ordeal in Captivity and Government Response
Survivors have shared harrowing accounts of their time in the bandits' den. Victims reported being fed only once or twice a day, primarily with maize powder pap, and enduring a six-day trek through the forest to a bandit enclave near a river. They described strict confinement, with permission required even for basic needs, and recounted instances of men being beaten and children being flogged for crying. Upon their release, Governor Uba Sani expressed shock at the incident, despite ongoing efforts to enhance security in the state. He highlighted the administration's collaboration with security agencies and mentioned that President Bola Tinubu was personally involved in the rescue efforts. The Governor also announced plans to establish a military base in the Kajuru–Kachia axis to bolster security in the region. The freed victims are expected to undergo medical examinations and receive psychosocial support before returning to their communities.

While it's a huge relief that everyone is released, the fact that such a mass abduction occurred during church services is deeply concerning for regional security.

Bandits are still running wild. This 'success' doesn't change the root problem.

Unacceptable that our citizens face such terror. We need real security reform, not just reactions.

Thank God for their safe return. A huge burden lifted from their families and community.

Why did this happen in the first place? Government failed to protect them from bandits.
