Organized Boycott Targets Muslim Families in Ghoti-Nandora
At least 10 Muslim families in Ghoti-Nandora village, located under the Lanji police station in Balaghat district, Madhya Pradesh, are reportedly facing an organized social and economic boycott. The boycott, which began in January, is alleged to have stemmed from inflammatory speeches made at a Hindu conference (mahasabha/sammelan) held in the village.
Calls to Sever Ties at Hindu Gathering
According to residents, the Hindu conference, specifically held on January 27, featured calls urging villagers to sever all social and commercial ties with the Muslim community. Speakers at the gathering reportedly encouraged residents to refrain from buying goods or food from Muslims and to conduct all transactions exclusively within the Hindu community.
Severe Economic and Social Impact
The boycott has led to significant economic hardship and social exclusion for the affected Muslim families. Their livelihoods have been severely disrupted, and they have been denied access to essential services. Specific instances reported include:
- Asif Hussain, a bus driver, was reportedly removed from his job driving a school bus, which was his sole source of income.
- Sadiq Hussain, an electrician, has been unable to find work for over a week as villagers have refused to hire him.
- Grocery shopkeepers have allegedly refused to sell essential items to Muslim families.
- Barbers have reportedly declined to provide services.
Residents describe an atmosphere of fear and intimidation, with some alleging that the disruption of livelihoods is a deliberate attempt to force Muslim families to leave the village.
Civil Society Calls for Intervention
The civil rights group Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR), based in Bhopal, has taken notice of the situation. Representatives from APCR met with the District Collector and Superintendent of Police, urging them to intervene immediately to end the boycott and take appropriate legal action against those responsible. APCR described the incident as 'extremely concerning' and highlighted that a public announcement (munadi) had been made calling for a complete halt to all transactions and employment involving Muslim families, posing a serious threat to social harmony and constitutional values.

Any act of economic discrimination targeting a community is a serious blow to our constitutional values and must be condemned. Yet, articles like this should also explore the historical context or specific grievances, real or perceived, that might fuel such divisive actions, even if they don't justify them.

Disgusting display of hatred. India deserves better than this.

It's truly heartbreaking to read about families facing such hardship and exclusion in their own village. While the APCR's call for intervention is necessary, a long-term solution needs to involve both legal redress and community-level dialogue to bridge divides.

Always two sides to a story. Article feels very one-sided.
