ADF Secures Critical Satellite Communications with SES IS-22 Agreement

Extended Agreement Ensures Long-Term Secure Communications

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has finalized an extended agreement with satellite communications provider SES, securing uninterrupted satellite communications for a minimum of 16 years. The deal, valued at A$180 million (US$121 million), centers on the continued use of the SES Intelsat 22 (IS-22) satellite and its crucial ultra-high frequency (UHF) military communications payload. This partnership ensures vital connectivity for the ADF through at least 2033, with options to extend services until 2041.

Strategic Importance in the Indo-Pacific

The IS-22 satellite, launched in 2012, has been a cornerstone of Australia's secure military communications, supporting both national missions and joint operations with key allies, most notably the United States. The agreement is particularly significant given the current global demand for secure military satellite communications, especially in the UHF band where supply is extremely limited. With no other comparable UHF capacity immediately available in the Indo-Pacific region, the continuation of service via IS-22 positions Australia to maintain a critical communications advantage and supports multinational defense collaboration.

Infrastructure Development and Operational Certainty

Under the renewed arrangement, SES will reposition the IS-22 satellite to a new orbital slot specified by the ADF to optimize coverage across key operating areas. Furthermore, SES will build a dedicated ground segment, including a purpose-built antenna facility on Australian soil. This infrastructure development is designed to solidify seamless operations, strengthen sovereign control, and support Australian jobs.

Official Statements Highlight Critical Capability

Philippe Glaesner, SVP of SES Global Government, emphasized the agreement's importance, stating, 'This agreement ensures critical communications capability for the ADF and its strategic partners across the Indo-Pacific.' He added, 'At a time when secure, sovereign communications are more vital than ever, it provides operational certainty and supports Australia's long-term resilience and leadership in defense. We are proud to serve as both a technological partner and strategic enabler for the ADF.'

Michael Hunt, Assistant Secretary Space Systems Branch, also commented on the deal, noting, 'This agreement not only ensures the ADF maintains access to secure UHF satellite communications (SATCOM) and remains interoperable with our coalition partners, but it also supports Australian jobs and strengthens sovereign control of critical communications capability.'

Sustaining a Strategic Edge

By securing long-term access to the IS-22's capabilities, the ADF aims to sustain assured command and control, secure mobility, and interoperability with coalition partners well into the next decade. The agreement prevents a potential capability gap while broader sovereign SATCOM initiatives mature.

This isn't true sovereign capability if we're leasing from SES.

Why are we still relying on foreign companies for such critical infrastructure?

16 years is too long for tech. We'll be stuck with outdated systems.
