Russian Forces Advance in Zaporizhzhia Region
Russian military forces have reportedly seized control of the settlement of Novoboikovskoye (also known as Novoboikivske) in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region. The announcement was made by the Russian Defense Ministry on Monday, January 12, 2026. According to the ministry, the Dnepr group of forces was responsible for the capture, describing their actions as 'decisive' and stating the settlement had been 'liberated'.
Widespread Strikes Reported Across Ukraine
In addition to the territorial gain, the Russian Defense Ministry detailed a broad campaign of military strikes. Russian tactical aviation, drones, missiles, and artillery reportedly targeted 157 locations across Ukraine. These strikes focused on a variety of targets, including:
- Ukrainian energy and transport infrastructure
- Military airfields
- A facility for long-range UAV production
- Temporary positions of Ukrainian forces and foreign mercenaries
The ministry also claimed significant Ukrainian casualties in recent engagements. The Tsentr (Center) group of forces reportedly eliminated over 400 Ukrainian soldiers within 24 hours, destroying several armored vehicles, including a US-made Stryker, an HMMWV, an Australian Bushmaster, three pickup trucks, and an artillery piece. Furthermore, the Vostok (East) group was said to have killed up to 205 Ukrainian service members, while Ukraine reportedly lost over 240 soldiers in clashes with Russia's Sever (North) group.
Air Defense Activity and Ukrainian Appeals
The Russian Ministry of Defense also reported active air defense operations, stating that 13 Ukrainian fixed-wing UAVs were intercepted and destroyed overnight across multiple regions. Separately, Xinhua reported that Russia's air defense forces intercepted and destroyed 52 fixed-wing drones, five guided aerial bombs, and four U.S.-made HIMARS rockets over the past 24 hours.
Amidst these developments, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reiterated calls for European nations to immediately release their stockpiled air defense missiles, emphasizing Ukraine's urgent need for such systems. The situation in the Zaporizhzhia region, particularly around Huliaipole, remains a focal point of intense fighting, with Ukrainian forces reporting 219 clashes on the front line over the past day.

Russia's focus on infrastructure and military targets suggests a strategy to cripple Ukraine's defensive capabilities, yet Ukraine's persistent appeals for aid indicate they are far from defeated. The effectiveness of these strikes will ultimately depend on Ukraine's ability to adapt and resupply.

They always inflate their numbers and minimize their own losses. This is pure disinformation.

It's challenging to verify the exact casualty numbers provided by the Russian Ministry of Defense, as both warring parties have a history of inflating enemy losses. However, the sheer volume of reported clashes confirms that the conflict remains exceptionally brutal and costly for all involved.

Ukraine's constant pleas for aid show they are losing. The special operation is achieving its goals.

The reported destruction of Western-supplied military equipment is a setback for Ukraine, but Zelensky's urgent calls for more air defense highlight their continued resolve. Both sides are clearly enduring immense losses in this protracted conflict.
