Governor Sanwo-Olu Extends Support to Military Veterans
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has demonstrated his administration's commitment to the welfare of military veterans and the families of fallen heroes with a substantial donation to the Lagos State Council of the Nigerian Legion. The announcement was made on Monday, January 5th or 6th, 2026, during the State Executive Council meeting at Lagos House, Ikeja, coinciding with the launch of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem Appeal Fund.
Details of the Comprehensive Donation
The support package from Governor Sanwo-Olu includes a cash donation of N100 million. In addition to financial aid, the governor also provided:
- Four two-bedroom apartments located in Ajara
- Two utility vehicles
- Four cows
- 500 bags of rice and other assorted food items
Armed Forces Remembrance Day: A National Tradition
The donations are part of the annual activities leading up to Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD), observed every year on January 15th in Nigeria. This significant day honors veterans of World War I and II, the Nigerian Civil War, and commemorates all servicemen of the Nigerian Armed Forces. The date was specifically chosen to mark the surrender of Biafran troops in 1970, signifying the end of the Nigerian Civil War. Preparations for AFRD typically begin two months prior with the sale of remembrance emblems across the country.
Governor's Statement and the Role of the Nigerian Legion
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of the gesture, stating that 'remembering fallen soldiers and caring for those who returned from service with injuries was both a moral and constitutional obligation.' He added that the support is a way of saying 'thank you for the sacrifices that allow all of us to live in a free and united country.' The Nigerian Legion, established in 1964, is a statutory body dedicated to promoting the welfare of ex-servicemen, fostering comradeship, providing financial and social support, assisting in reintegration into civilian life, and creating job opportunities for veterans.

Much needed assistance for the Nigerian Legion. This will make a real difference.

While the financial and material support is a welcome relief, ensuring these resources actually reach the most vulnerable veterans without corruption will be the real test. Transparency in distribution is crucial.

So proud to see our leaders remember the sacrifices made. A step in the right direction.

It's good to see the government acknowledging the sacrifices of our armed forces with these donations. However, a more comprehensive and sustainable long-term welfare program would provide more lasting impact than annual gifts.

N100m and a few houses? That's barely a drop in the ocean for all our veterans.
