Tragedy Strikes Yobe-Jigawa Border
A devastating boat accident occurred on Saturday, January 3, 2026, along the border between Yobe and Jigawa states in northern Nigeria, claiming the lives of at least 25 people. Another 14 individuals remain missing following the incident, which saw a canoe carrying 52 passengers capsize on the Kumadugu/Yobe River. Only 13 passengers have been rescued alive.
The ill-fated vessel was traveling from Adiyani town in Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa State to Garbi town in Nguru Local Government Area of Yobe State. The accident took place around 7:48 PM local time.
Details of the Mishap
According to Dr. Mohammed Goje, Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA/SEMA), the canoe overturned mid-journey. The victims were reportedly returning from Adiyani town, where they had been engaged in fishing, farming, and other local business activities.
Preliminary reports and official statements attribute the tragic capsizing to several factors, including overloading, poor visibility, and a reported leakage in the canoe. Lawan Adam, the Jigawa State Police spokesperson, noted that safety laws banning night journeys and overloading were ignored. He added that if the driver survived, 'he will be prosecuted for negligence'.
Rescue Efforts and Official Response
Immediately following the incident, extensive search and rescue operations were launched. These efforts are being led by the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA), with support from security agencies, emergency responders, and local community volunteers. Teams from Bade and Nguru local councils have been dispatched to assist in locating the missing passengers and recovering bodies.
Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has expressed his condolences to the affected families and communities. He has also directed that all necessary medical and logistical support be provided immediately to the rescued victims receiving treatment, emphasizing the need for expedited referral services to save lives.
Recurring Waterway Tragedies
This accident highlights the persistent issue of deadly boat mishaps in Nigeria. Such incidents are common, particularly in remote areas where water transportation is prevalent due to its convenience and often the lack of adequate road infrastructure. These tragedies are frequently linked to overloaded and poorly maintained vessels, with many operating without essential safety measures like life jackets.

Many rely on these boats for their livelihoods, but the risks are unacceptable. There must be a balance between accessibility and non-negotiable safety standards.

Overloading, poor visibility – same story every time. Nothing changes.

Finally, some focus on waterway safety. It's long overdue.

The immediate causes like overloading are apparent, yet we must also address the poverty and lack of alternatives that push people into such dangerous travel options.

Another preventable tragedy. The authorities failed again.
