Escalation of Drone Activity Over Russian Territory
Moscow has reported a significant escalation in Ukrainian drone attacks targeting the Russian capital and surrounding regions since the beginning of 2026. Russian officials assert that these attacks have become a daily occurrence, marking a shift from earlier, more sporadic incidents to a systematic campaign.
According to Russia's Ministry of Defense, air defense systems have been actively engaged in intercepting unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). On January 4 alone, Russian defenses allegedly destroyed 57 drones over the Moscow region, part of a total of 437 drones downed across Russia. Over the past week, Russian state news agency RIA Novosti calculated that more than 1,500 Ukrainian drones were intercepted over Russian territory and the Crimean Peninsula.
Targets have included not only Moscow but also various border and inland regions such as Bryansk, Kursk, Kaluga, Tula, Voronezh, Belgorod, Rostov, and Oryol. While Russian authorities typically report the number of drones intercepted, they rarely provide details on damage or casualties unless civilians are affected. However, on January 4, local officials reported that a Ukrainian drone strike in the Belgorod region killed one person and wounded two others, including a four-year-old child. Another fatality was reported in the Kursk region.
Significant Disruptions to Air Travel
The intensified drone activity has led to considerable disruptions at Moscow's major airports. Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Zhukovsky airports have experienced temporary closures and widespread flight delays and cancellations. Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency, Rosaviatsiya, has regularly issued statements regarding temporary flight restrictions, citing the need to ensure flight safety.
On January 4, approximately 200 flights in the Russian capital were delayed, with some cancellations. These disruptions coincide with Russia's extended New Year and Orthodox Christmas holidays, a period of high domestic and international travel that runs until January 9.
Official Responses and Ukrainian Rationale
Russian officials, including Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and the Ministry of Defense, have consistently reported on the interception of drones. Mayor Sobyanin has frequently announced 'successful interceptions' over the Moscow region. Russia has characterized these attacks as a 'terrorist attack' and a serious escalation of the conflict.
Ukrainian authorities have not issued immediate official comments regarding the daily drone attacks on Moscow in early 2026. However, Kyiv has previously articulated its strategic objectives for strikes deep within Russian territory. These aims include:
- Weakening Russian military logistics
- Damaging energy infrastructure
- Increasing the economic cost of the war for the Kremlin
- Responding to ongoing Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukraine

A necessary response to Russian aggression. Fair play.

Kyiv's stated objectives for these drone attacks are understandable given the ongoing conflict, yet the reporting of daily incidents and civilian impact highlights the grim reality of urban warfare.

This is a dangerous path, risking wider conflict.

Targeting civilians is never okay, regardless of the conflict.
