Overnight Attacks Target Ukrainian Energy Infrastructure
Russian forces launched a series of missile and drone strikes overnight into Monday, January 5, 2026, targeting energy infrastructure across multiple Ukrainian regions. The attacks resulted in widespread power outages, impacting residents in Donetsk, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, and Kyiv Oblasts. The strikes were confirmed by Ukrainian officials, including Ukrenergo and Deputy Energy Minister Oleksandr Vyazovchenko.
Slavutych Experiences Complete De-energization
The city of Slavutych in Kyiv Oblast was particularly hard-hit, experiencing a complete de-energization. Approximately 8,500 families in Slavutych were left without electricity. Despite the power loss, critical infrastructure facilities in the city successfully switched to backup power, ensuring the continued supply of heat and water. Mobile communications and internet services reportedly remained operational. Kyiv regional governor Mykola Kalashnyk stated that Slavutych lost power due to the Russian attack.
Casualties and Damage Reported in Kyiv and Surrounding Areas
The overnight barrage also led to casualties and significant damage. In the capital, Kyiv, a medical facility was struck, resulting in one fatality – a 30-year-old patient – and injuries to three other individuals. At the time of the strike, 26 patients were present in the clinic. In the Fastiv district of Kyiv Oblast, a civilian born in 1951 was killed, and several residential buildings, garages, cars, and production/warehouse premises sustained damage.
Further reports indicated an attack on a generating facility in Donetsk Oblast. In Kharkiv Oblast, a crew from Kharkivoblenergo came under attack by a Russian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) during emergency repair operations, though no injuries were reported. Chernihiv also experienced a major fire and at least six explosions, with an industrial facility reportedly hit.
Ukrainian Response and Ongoing Challenges
Ukrainian authorities reported that Russian forces utilized a combination of drones, including Geran strike drones and Shahed-type drones, alongside missiles such as Iskander-M ballistic missiles and S-300 air defense guided missiles. The Ukrainian Air Force stated that Russia launched nine missiles and 165 drones, with approximately 100 Shaheds neutralized.
Emergency repair works have commenced in affected areas where security conditions permit. Ukraine's Ministry of Energy noted that over the past week, more than 100 cases of damage to electrical networks were recorded, with nearly 20 deliberate strikes on energy infrastructure. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the attacks, underscoring the continuous need for air defense systems and international assistance. Due to the ongoing impact of Russian attacks on energy infrastructure, hourly power outage schedules and electricity consumption limits for industrial consumers were implemented across most Ukrainian regions on January 5.

Another day, another report of destruction. My taxes shouldn't fund this.

This endless cycle of violence helps no one. Where is the push for peace talks?

Targeting civilian infrastructure is a cowardly act of terrorism.

Absolutely horrific. Russia must be held accountable for these war crimes.

It's undeniably tragic to see civilians suffer from these attacks, yet the strategic importance of energy infrastructure in wartime means both sides will target it.

Typical propaganda. We only ever hear one side of the story.
