Riyadh's King Salman International Airport Initiates Third Runway Construction
King Salman International Airport (KSIA) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has officially begun the construction of its third runway. This significant undertaking is a core element of the airport's comprehensive Master Plan, aimed at substantially increasing air traffic capacity and operational efficiency. The project aligns with the Kingdom's broader economic development agenda under Saudi Vision 2030.
Ambitious Master Plan for a Global Aviation Hub
The development of KSIA, situated on the existing site of King Khalid International Airport, is an expansive project covering approximately 57 square kilometers. The Master Plan envisions a total of six parallel runways, alongside the integration of current terminals with three new terminals. Beyond aviation infrastructure, the airport complex will include 12 square kilometers of airport support facilities, residential areas, leisure amenities, and retail outlets.
Upon completion, KSIA is projected to accommodate up to 100 million passengers annually by 2030, with an ultimate capacity reaching 185 million passengers by 2050. Cargo handling capacity is also set for a major boost, targeting over 2 million tonnes by 2030 and 3.5 million tonnes by 2050. The Master Plan was initially announced by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz on November 28, 2022.
Third Runway Details and Operational Impact
The newly commenced third runway will span 4,200 meters in length and incorporate multiple access taxiways to ensure smooth aircraft flow. Its design is specifically aligned with Riyadh's prevailing wind conditions to guarantee safe and efficient aircraft operations across various scenarios. This addition is expected to significantly enhance the airport's operational capacity, increasing aircraft movements from the current 65 per hour to approximately 85 per hour. The construction is a collaborative effort involving FCC Construcción SA and Al-Mabani General Contractors Company.
Driving Vision 2030 and Economic Growth
The expansion of King Salman International Airport is a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, a strategic framework aimed at diversifying the Kingdom's economy away from oil dependence. The airport is envisioned as a critical driver for establishing Riyadh as a global hub for business, tourism, and logistics, leveraging its strategic geographical position between Asia, Africa, and Europe. The project is anticipated to contribute 27 billion Saudi Riyals annually to non-oil GDP and generate 103,000 direct and indirect jobs. Furthermore, the new airport is designed with sustainability at its core, aiming for LEED Platinum certification and planning to be powered by renewable energy.
