Historical Context of the Offensive

The Sarıkamış Offensive was an ambitious military operation launched by the Ottoman Third Army against the Russian Empire on the Caucasus Front during the early stages of World War I. Devised by then-Minister of War, Enver Pasha, the strategy aimed for a swift envelopment of Russian forces in the mountainous terrain of Sarıkamış, a town located in present-day Kars Province, Turkey. However, the Ottoman troops, ill-equipped and unprepared for the severe winter conditions of the Allahüekber and Soğanlı mountain ranges, faced insurmountable challenges.

A Catastrophic Loss of Life

The offensive resulted in a devastating defeat for the Ottoman forces, with estimates of casualties varying but consistently highlighting immense losses due to non-combat factors. Official Turkish history indicates approximately 50,000 total casualties, including 32,000 killed in action and 15,000 succumbing to sickness. Other sources suggest that as many as 60,000 to 90,000 Ottoman soldiers perished, primarily from frostbite, hunger, and hypothermia, rather than direct combat. The extreme cold, with temperatures plummeting well below freezing, turned the campaign into a humanitarian catastrophe.

Memorial Events and Public Participation

The 111th-anniversary commemorations, which took place on January 3 and 4, 2026, saw widespread participation across Türkiye. In Sarıkamış, Kars, thousands of citizens, alongside government ministers, joined a traditional memorial walk, often retracing parts of the arduous route taken by the Ottoman soldiers through the snow-covered mountains. The event, frequently held under the banner 'The Youth Follow the Footsteps of Martyrs,' included religious memorial services and various remembrance programs. Preparations by local authorities in Kars included environmental improvements and the erection of a new monument dedicated to the Sarıkamış martyrs in the town center, underscoring the enduring significance of the event in Turkish national memory.
