Russian Forces Continue Offensive Operations Across Ukraine, Face Stiff Resistance on January 3

Continued Offensive Efforts Across the Front

On January 3, 2026, Russian forces persisted with offensive operations in various sectors across Ukraine, though reports indicate a lack of confirmed advances in several key areas. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported a total of 116 combat engagements along the front line on January 2, with the most intense fighting concentrated in the Pokrovsk direction.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) noted continued Russian offensive actions in directions such as Hulyaipole, Siversk, Dobropillya, Pokrovsk, western Zaporizhia Oblast, Kherson, and northern Sumy Oblast. However, confirmed territorial gains were not reported in most of these areas on January 3. Conversely, Ukrainian forces recently made advances in the Kupyansk direction, while Russian forces were noted to have advanced in northern Kharkiv Oblast and the Kostyantynivka-Druzhkivka tactical area.

Intense Aerial Assaults and Civilian Impact

The night of January 2-3 saw a significant Russian aerial assault, with forces launching 95 strike drones, including approximately 60 Shahed-type drones. Ukrainian air defenses successfully neutralized 80 of these drones across the northern, southern, and eastern regions of the country. Despite defensive efforts, 15 drone impacts were recorded at eight locations, causing damage and triggering air raid alerts in multiple regions.

In Mykolaiv, explosions were reported as Russian strikes targeted a gas station and critical infrastructure, leading to power outages. Kyiv also experienced explosions due to air defense activity. Beyond drone attacks, Russian forces conducted one missile strike involving two missiles and 57 airstrikes with 153 guided aerial bombs on January 2. Civilian areas in Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, Kharkiv, and Sumy regions also sustained damage and casualties from drone, artillery, and air strikes. Specific incidents included:

  • A drone strike on a garage cooperative in Zaporizhzhia, damaging a vehicle.
  • Fatalities and injuries in Kostiantynivka and Druzhkivka due to tube artillery and FPV drone strikes.
  • Three people wounded in Kharkiv region from overnight drone strikes into January 4, and the death toll from a prior missile attack on Kharkiv rising to four.

Ukrainian Defensive Actions and Diplomatic Engagements

Ukrainian defenders actively repelled numerous Russian assaults across the front. In the Kupiansk direction, two enemy attacks near Petropavlivka and toward Kurylivka were repelled. The Lyman direction saw nine Russian attacks, while five attempts to advance were stopped in the Sloviansk direction. Ukrainian authorities also ordered the evacuation of over 3,000 children and their parents from 44 frontline settlements in the Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions due to intensified Russian advances in those areas.

Concurrently, Ukraine engaged in diplomatic efforts, with national security advisors from Western allies meeting in Kyiv on January 3. Discussions focused on a framework peace plan, security guarantees, and the reconstruction and economic recovery of Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also announced proposed personnel changes within the Ukrainian government and military, including the suggestion of Mykhailo Fedorov as the new Minister of Defense.

Outlook

The ongoing conflict continues to be characterized by persistent Russian offensive pressure across multiple axes, met by determined Ukrainian defense. While Russian forces continue to launch significant aerial attacks, particularly with drones, confirmed ground advances remain limited in many areas, indicating a largely static but intensely contested front line.

Russia's 'advances' are clearly stalled; Ukraine is holding strong against overwhelming odds.

Despite reports of Russian forces facing stiff resistance, the fact that they are still conducting offensive operations in so many sectors shows the immense pressure Ukrainian forces are under.
