Tragedy Strikes Swiss Alps on New Year's Eve
A devastating fire at a popular bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana on New Year's Eve has resulted in at least 40 fatalities and 119 injuries, with many victims suffering severe burns. The blaze, which erupted around 1:30 AM local time on January 1, 2026, at Le Constellation bar, has prompted a large-scale emergency response and a criminal investigation.
Among those reported missing is Charlotte Niddam, a 15-year-old Israeli citizen who also holds British and French nationalities. Niddam, who previously attended Immanuel College in Hertfordshire, UK, was working as a babysitter in the area, according to the Crans-Montana resort website.
Investigation Underway into Fire's Origin
Swiss authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the managers of Le Constellation bar, suspecting negligent homicide, negligent bodily harm, and causing fire by negligence. Initial findings suggest the fire was likely caused by sparkler candles, also referred to as 'fountain candles' or 'Bengal lights,' attached to champagne bottles. These were reportedly carried too close to the ceiling, igniting the wooden structure or soundproofing material.
Witnesses described a rapid spread of the flames, leading to a 'widespread explosion' as combustible gases ignited. The bar, which could accommodate up to 300-400 people and was crowded with New Year's Eve revellers, was largely located in the basement, making escape difficult and contributing to the high number of casualties.
International Impact and Identification Challenges
The victims and injured represent a diverse group of nationalities, including 71 Swiss, 14 French, 11 Italian, 4 Serbian, 1 Bosnian, 1 Belgian, 1 Portuguese, and 1 Polish national, with the nationalities of 14 others still unclear. Israel's Foreign Ministry has confirmed it is in contact with Charlotte Niddam's family regarding her disappearance.
The process of identifying the deceased is proving challenging due to the severity of the burns. As of January 3, 2026, four Swiss nationals between the ages of 16 and 21 have been formally identified. Additionally, Emanuele Galeppini, a 17-year-old Italian golfer, has been identified as one of the victims. Many of the injured have been transferred to specialist burn units across Europe, with officials warning that the death toll may not be final.
Community Mourns and Prays for Missing
In the wake of the tragedy, an impromptu memorial has emerged near the Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, where mourners have left candles and flowers. Hundreds have also gathered at the nearby Church of Montana-Station to pray for the victims. Charlotte Niddam's former school, Immanuel College, issued a statement urging the community to 'pray for a miracle' for Charlotte and the other missing individuals, emphasizing the family's request for thoughts and prayers during this 'extremely difficult time.'

While the investigation into the bar managers for negligence is crucial, this incident also highlights broader issues with fire safety regulations in crowded venues. There needs to be a systemic review of how such events are approved and monitored.

Focusing on one teen feels exploitative. All lives lost are equal.

They always blame the staff. What about the venue's core design?
