Tragedy Strikes Swiss Resort on New Year's Day

A catastrophic fire ripped through Le Constellation bar in the upscale Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana in the early hours of January 1, 2026, during New Year's Eve celebrations. The inferno resulted in the deaths of approximately 40 people and left 119 others injured, many severely. Among the casualties, eight French citizens have been reported missing, adding to the international dimension of the tragedy.

The blaze erupted around 01:30 CET at the popular bar, which is known to attract international tourists. Eyewitness accounts and preliminary investigations suggest the fire was likely caused by sparklers or pyrotechnic devices attached to champagne bottles, which ignited the bar's wooden ceiling. This led to a rapid 'flashover', engulfing the crowded venue where more than 100 people were celebrating. Many of the victims were reported to be teenagers and young adults.

Of the 119 injured, 113 have been formally identified, while identification procedures are still underway for six others. The injured include a significant number of foreign nationals: 71 Swiss, 14 French, 11 Italian, and four Serbian citizens, along with individuals from Bosnia, Belgium, Luxembourg, Poland, and Portugal. The severity of the burns has made the identification process challenging, with authorities relying on dental and DNA records.

Emergency Response and Ongoing Investigation

The emergency response saw 13 helicopters and 42 ambulances mobilized, with intensive care units in Valais quickly reaching capacity. Consequently, many burn victims were transferred to specialized hospitals across Switzerland and in neighboring countries, including France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, and Poland.

The Valais cantonal police and public prosecutor have launched a full judicial investigation into the incident. While the leading hypothesis points to the pyrotechnics, all lines of inquiry are being examined, including the compliance of the premises with safety regulations, the materials used in renovations, the presence of fire extinguishers, and the adequacy of escape routes and permitted occupancy. The two French managers of Le Constellation bar have been questioned as part of the ongoing probe.

The tragedy has drawn international attention and condolences. French President Emmanuel Macron offered support, and some survivors have been transferred to French hospitals for treatment. The French foreign ministry confirmed that eight French citizens remain unaccounted for, and nine French citizens were among the injured.
