Monthly Navigo Pass Sees €2 Increase
As of January 1, 2026, the monthly Navigo pass fare in the Île-de-France region has officially increased by 2 euros, bringing the new price to 90.80 euros. This adjustment follows a decision by the Île-de-France Mobilités Board of Directors. The previous monthly fare stood at 88.80 euros.
Reasons Behind the Fare Hike
The increase is primarily attributed to the need to finance the ongoing modernization and expansion of transport services across the Île-de-France network. Île-de-France Mobilités has cited several key projects and initiatives that necessitate additional funding, including:
- The creation of new metro lines, specifically lines 15, 16, 17, and 18.
- The replacement of existing trains and buses, and the extension of certain RER and metro lines.
- The deployment of 400 new metro cars across half of the lines within the next five years.
- Efforts to achieve a 100% clean fleet of buses and coaches by 2029.
Beyond network development, inflation has also been identified as a factor impacting the annual operating costs of the public transport network. The fare adjustment is consistent with an agreement signed in 2023 between Île-de-France Mobilités and the French State, which limits annual tariff increases to 'inflation rate + 1 percentage point' until 2031.
Funding Structure and User Impact
While the displayed monthly fare is 90.80 euros, Île-de-France Mobilités emphasizes that the actual cost of the Navigo Pass is significantly higher, estimated at approximately 280 euros per month. This substantial difference is covered by a shared funding model, with 52.5% of the cost subsidized by contributions from Île-de-France companies with more than 11 employees, and the remaining portion largely covered by local authorities and occasional users.
For many employees in the region, the effective cost of the Navigo pass is further reduced due to mandatory employer reimbursements, which can bring their personal contribution down to as low as 45.40 euros or even 22.70 euros per month.
Broader Fare Adjustments
The increase is not limited to the monthly Navigo pass. Other public transport fares in the region have also seen adjustments for 2026. For instance, the weekly Navigo pass is now 32.40 euros, and the annual Navigo pass is priced at 998.80 euros. Individual metro-train-RER tickets are now 2.55 euros, while bus-tram tickets are 2.05 euros.

Another price hike, always hitting the commuters. Unacceptable!

It's good to see investment in new lines and a cleaner fleet, which is crucial for the environment. However, the consistent fare hikes put a strain on household budgets, especially for those who pay the full price.

Inflation is real. This small adjustment ensures progress continues.

Considering the subsidies, it's still a bargain for what we get.

Understanding that inflation affects operating costs is reasonable, and the agreement for annual adjustments provides some predictability. But I wonder if there are other funding mechanisms that could be explored to lessen the direct burden on users.

This is a burden on those who rely on it most. Not fair.

Modernization at whose expense? Taxpayers already pay enough.

Essential investment for a world-class network. Quality costs!

€2 is still €2. When does it stop? Public transport should be cheaper.

They always find reasons to raise prices. My salary isn't going up €2 a month!
