Overnight Assault on Odesa Causes Casualties and Widespread Damage
The Ukrainian port city of Odesa experienced a significant Russian drone attack during the night of December 30-31, 2025. The assault injured six people, including three children, and inflicted considerable damage on residential areas and critical infrastructure. Regional officials confirmed the use of Shahed-type attack drones in the bombardment.
Civilian Injuries and Residential Destruction
Among the injured were a seven-month-old infant, a 14-year-old boy, and an eight-year-old girl, all of whom required hospitalization. A 42-year-old man was also hospitalized with serious injuries, while others received medical assistance at the scene. The drone strikes directly impacted four multi-story apartment buildings, causing fires and structural damage, including broken windows and damaged facades. At least 14 cars and private garages were also damaged.
Critical Infrastructure Targeted, Leading to Outages
The attack also severely affected Odesa's vital infrastructure. Two energy facilities belonging to the power provider DTEK sustained significant damage. This led to extensive disruptions, leaving over 170,000 people in Odesa Oblast without electricity, water, and heating. Officials reported that 10 substations in the Odesa region alone had been damaged in December, highlighting a pattern of intensified targeting of energy infrastructure during the colder months.
Official Response and Broader Context
Oleh Kiper, the head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, stated that the overnight strikes 'are further evidence of the enemy's terror tactics, which deliberately target civilian infrastructure'. Serhiy Lysak, head of Odesa's city military administration, also reported on the damage and the efforts by emergency crews to restore services. This attack is part of an ongoing escalation of long-range attacks on urban areas and energy infrastructure across Ukraine, as Russia's invasion approaches its four-year mark.

The destruction of vital infrastructure in Odesa is devastating, but the international community also needs to address the underlying geopolitical tensions that fuel such prolonged conflicts.
