Cold Front Triggers Triple Cold Alert for Mexico City on New Year's Eve, Widespread Rain Across Mexico

Mexico City Under Triple Cold Alert

Mexico City experienced a significant drop in temperatures on New Year's Eve 2025, as a cold front swept across the region, leading the city government to issue a triple cold alert. The Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGRIPC) activated an orange alert for the Tlalpan borough, where temperatures were forecast to fall to between 1 and 3 degrees Celsius, with the potential for frost.

Additionally, yellow alerts were issued for the boroughs of Álvaro Obregón, Cuajimalpa, Gustavo A. Madero, Magdalena Contreras, Milpa Alta, and Xochimilco, where temperatures were expected to range between 4 and 6 degrees Celsius during the early hours of January 1. The capital's remaining boroughs anticipated temperatures dropping to 8 degrees Celsius. These warnings were in effect from midnight on December 31 until 8 a.m. on January 1, with light showers also possible in the outskirts of Mexico City.

Widespread Rain and Cold Across Mexico

The cold front, identified as Cold Front No. 25, originating from the Gulf of Mexico, combined with other atmospheric events, brought more than just freezing temperatures to the capital. It caused widespread heavy rainfall and further temperature decreases across various regions of Mexico.

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) issued forecasts for:

  • Isolated intense rainfall in the states of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Puebla, Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Tabasco.
  • Very heavy rainfall in Veracruz, San Luis Potosí, Hidalgo, and Querétaro.
  • Heavy rain in Nuevo León, Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo.

The SMN also warned of potential hazards, including landslides, flooding, and waterlogging in low-lying areas due to the heavy precipitation. Coastal areas, specifically Tamaulipas and Veracruz, were expected to experience three to five-meter-high waves, while strong wind gusts of 50 to 70 km/h were forecast for Baja California, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and San Luis Potosí.

Official Recommendations for Residents

Authorities urged residents to take precautions against the cold. Recommendations included bundling up in layers of clothing, covering the mouth and nose to avoid inhaling freezing air, and consuming warm beverages and nutritious foods. For those using heaters at home, maintaining good ventilation was advised to prevent accidents.

It's crucial to warn people about this cold front, but these extreme weather events are becoming more frequent. We should be discussing long-term climate adaptation strategies, not just immediate warnings.

Understanding the immediate dangers of flooding and cold is vital, however, this specific event feels like part of a larger pattern of unpredictable weather. It's a wake-up call for our infrastructure.
