UK Issues Amber Cold Health Alerts as New Year Brings Freezing Temperatures

Amber Cold Health Alerts Issued for Northern England

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), in partnership with the Met Office, has issued amber cold health alerts across the North East and North West of England, including areas like Cumbria. These alerts came into effect at 8pm on Sunday, December 28, 2025, and are set to remain in place until midday on Monday, January 5, 2026. All other regions in England, including the East Midlands, West Midlands, South East, South West, East of England, Yorkshire and the Humber, and London, are under a less severe yellow alert for the same period.

Forecasted Temperatures and Wintry Conditions

Forecasters predict a significant drop in temperatures across the UK as the New Year approaches. Areas under the amber alert, such as the North East and North West of England, are expected to see temperatures fall to around 3-5°C. Regions under the yellow alert can anticipate temperatures of approximately 4-6°C from New Year's Day. Northern parts of the UK could experience overnight lows of up to -6°C, with some areas in northern Scotland potentially reaching -6°C or -7°C. The Met Office has also warned of 'wintry hazards' and the potential for snow, particularly in northern areas, from New Year's Day onwards. A yellow national severe weather warning for snow and ice has been issued for northern Scotland, active from Thursday, December 29, through Friday morning.

Public Health Concerns and Service Impacts

An amber cold health alert signifies that 'cold weather impacts are likely to be felt across the whole health service for an extended period of time, with potential for the whole population to be at risk and where other sectors may also start to observe impacts, indicating a coordinated response is required.' The UKHSA has warned that these conditions are 'likely' to cause significant impacts across health and social care settings, including a 'rise in deaths' among vulnerable individuals. Key concerns include:

  • An increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, and chest infections, especially for individuals over 65 years old and those with pre-existing health conditions.
  • Vulnerable younger people and those experiencing homelessness are also at heightened risk.
  • Increased demand on NHS and social care services.
  • Potential staffing issues due to external factors like travel delays.
  • Challenges in maintaining recommended indoor temperatures of 18°C in places like hospitals and care homes.

Guidance for the Public

Dr. Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, emphasized the importance of community support, stating: 'As the colder weather sets in it is vital to check in on friends, family and neighbours that are most vulnerable.' The public is advised to take precautions to stay safe and warm:

  • Keep homes heated to at least 18°C.
  • Stay active where possible to maintain body warmth and improve circulation.
  • Consume hot meals and drinks regularly to help maintain body temperature.
  • Check on vulnerable individuals who may need extra support.
  • Plan ahead by stocking up on essentials and ensuring necessary medications are on hand.
  • Exercise caution when traveling due to potential icy conditions.

Recognizing the need to check on neighbours is crucial for community spirit, however, the root causes of vulnerability, like homelessness and poverty, also need significant attention beyond just cold weather alerts. This is a symptom, not the cure.
