Officer Fatally Wounded During Robbery Response
A home robbery attempt in the exclusive Jardines del Pedregal neighborhood of Mexico City tragically resulted in the death of a police officer on Sunday, December 28, 2025. Police Officer Román Martínez Estrada of the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC) succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained during a confrontation with the suspects. The incident unfolded at a residence located on Lluvia street, near Paseo del Pedregal, in the Álvaro Obregón borough.
According to official reports, two officers responded to a 911 call regarding a robbery in progress. Upon their arrival, they observed several individuals exiting the home. As the suspects noticed the police presence, one of them opened fire on the officers.
Shootout and Pursuit Details
During the exchange of gunfire, Officer Martínez Estrada was shot in the rib area. Despite his injury, he managed to repel the aggression, reportedly wounding one of the assailants. The head of the SSC, Pablo Vázquez Camacho, later confirmed the officer's death, expressing profound sorrow and vowing that there would be no impunity for the crime.
The suspects initially fled the scene in a blue van. This vehicle was subsequently damaged by gunfire and crashed a few blocks away. The perpetrators then abandoned the damaged van and proceeded to steal another vehicle, identified by some sources as a Chevrolet Aveo, to continue their escape.
Investigation and Arrests
A large-scale police operation was launched, involving a virtual cordon and a pursuit that extended across the city. The stolen vehicle and a safe, presumably taken from the robbed residence, were later located in the Miguel Hidalgo borough. The pursuit culminated in the area of Polanco, near Plaza Antara and the intersection of Ejército Nacional and Prolongación Moliere.
Authorities confirmed that one suspect was detained in connection with the incident. The SSC stated that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in the robbery and the fatal shooting of Officer Martínez Estrada.

One suspect? That's barely scratching the surface of the problem.

Officer Martínez Estrada's sacrifice is a stark reminder of the dangers our law enforcement face. Still, the persistent high crime rates, even with police presence, indicate a need for a more integrated approach to public safety beyond just reactive responses.

The SSC head's vow for no impunity is important for public trust and morale. Yet, until more comprehensive strategies address the root causes of violent crime, these tragedies will sadly continue to occur.

It's good that one suspect was apprehended and the stolen items recovered, showing some police effectiveness. But the ongoing challenge of securing wealthy neighborhoods suggests that criminal networks are well-organized and require a more sophisticated counter-strategy.
