Widespread Drone Interceptions Reported
The Russian Defense Ministry has reported a significant increase in Ukrainian drone activity over various Russian regions in late December 2025. Air defense systems were actively engaged, intercepting numerous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over areas including Krasnodar Krai, the Republic of Adygeya, and the Moscow region. These incidents have been accompanied by reports of damage to infrastructure and temporary disruptions to air travel.
Incidents in Southern Russia: Krasnodar and Adygeya
On December 27, 2025, the Russian Defense Ministry stated that its air defenses shot down seven Ukrainian drones over southern Russia. Specifically, four drones were intercepted over Krasnodar Krai and three over the Republic of Adygeya. Just two days prior, on December 25, a more extensive attack targeted the region, with drone strikes hitting the port of Temryuk in Krasnodar Krai. These strikes ignited a fire at two oil product storage tanks, with the blaze reportedly spreading across approximately 2,000 square meters. While no casualties were reported at the Temryuk port, a firefighter was injured in the neighboring Rostov region during an industrial facility fire. Ukrainian forces, including the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), later confirmed striking the Temryuk Seaport and an oil refinery in Novoshakhtinsk, with some reports indicating the use of British-supplied Storm Shadow cruise missiles in the latter attack. Earlier, on December 22, the Krasnodar Territory also reported damage to two berths, a pipeline, and two ships following a drone attack.
Drone Activity Near the Capital
The Moscow region has also experienced repeated drone incursions. On December 27, 2025, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that air defenses intercepted more than 20 drones 'flying towards' the Russian capital, with no immediate reports of damage or casualties. This followed an incident on December 25, when Sobyanin claimed eight drones were destroyed while attempting to attack Moscow. The Russian Defense Ministry on the same day indicated that nine drones were downed across the Moscow region as part of a larger wave of 141 Ukrainian drones intercepted nationwide. Earlier in the month, on December 11, a significant drone attack on Moscow saw 32 drones shot down, leading to temporary flight suspensions at all Moscow airports.
Broader Context of Drone Operations
The Russian Defense Ministry has consistently reported high numbers of intercepted drones across various regions. On December 28, 2025, the ministry stated that 12 drones were destroyed over the Samara region, targeting the Syzran oil refinery. On December 26, a total of 77 Ukrainian drones were reportedly intercepted over multiple Russian regions. These actions are part of an ongoing series of drone attacks that Ukraine has intensified, particularly targeting Russian energy and military infrastructure, which Kyiv states is aimed at undermining Russia's war efforts.

Unacceptable attacks on civilian infrastructure. The world needs to see this.

The targeting of energy infrastructure is a strategic move by Ukraine, but it inevitably raises questions about the long-term impact on civilian populations and the environment.

Russia started this war. Ukraine has every right to defend itself.

While these drone attacks are concerning for Russian civilians, they are a direct consequence of the ongoing conflict. Escalation is a risk for everyone involved.
