Iran Leads 21 Nations in Condemning Israel's Recognition of Somaliland

International Outcry Follows Somaliland Recognition

A coalition of 21 predominantly Muslim countries, led by Iran, has collectively denounced Israel's formal recognition of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state. The joint statement, issued on December 27, 2025, follows Israel's decision on December 26, 2025, to become the first United Nations member state to acknowledge Somaliland's independence.

The condemnation emphasizes that Israel's action constitutes a 'blatant violation of Somalia's sovereignty and territorial integrity' and poses a 'threat to regional peace and security' in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea. Signatories to the statement, which also included the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), warned against the serious repercussions of such an 'unprecedented measure' on international peace and security.

Violation of International Law and Sovereignty Cited

The joint statement explicitly labeled Israel's recognition as a 'clear violation of the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter and international law'. According to Iran's foreign ministry spokesman, Esmail Baqaei, Israel's actions amount to a 'gross breach of Somalia's sovereignty and territorial integrity through efforts to advance a plot to fragment the Islamic country'.

The participating nations, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Maldives, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Algeria, Comoros, Djibouti, and Gambia, affirmed their full support for the sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia. They rejected any measures that would undermine Somalia's unity or territorial integrity, arguing that recognizing parts of a sovereign state sets a 'dangerous precedent'.

Broader Regional Implications and Palestinian Issue

Beyond the immediate concerns for Somalia's territorial integrity, the joint statement also rejected any potential link between Israel's recognition of Somaliland and 'any attempts to forcibly expel the Palestinian people out of their land'. This aspect highlights a broader regional context, where the Palestinian issue remains a central point of contention for many Muslim-majority nations.

Somaliland, a self-declared state in the Horn of Africa, unilaterally declared independence from Somalia on May 18, 1991. Until Israel's recent move, it had not received formal recognition from any UN member state. Somalia continues to consider Somaliland an integral part of its territory. Following Israel's recognition, Somalia has requested an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council, scheduled for December 29, 2025.

Israel's Stated Rationale

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the recognition was made 'in the spirit of the Abraham Accords' and aimed to address 'Iranian-sponsored Houthi terrorism in the Red Sea and Strait of Aden'. Somaliland's President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi reportedly expressed his country's aspiration to join the Abraham Accords, a series of normalization agreements between Israel and several Arab nations.

This is a blatant violation of international law and Somalia's sovereignty. Israel is just creating more chaos.

Somaliland's desire for independence is valid, but ignoring the international consensus and the UN Charter could set a problematic example for future secession movements.

The Abraham Accords are expanding, which is great for regional stability. Somaliland joining makes sense.

Iran and its allies always condemn Israel, regardless of the issue. Their outrage just proves Israel made a good choice.

Another example of Israel undermining stability in the region. This will only escalate tensions.
