The incident, which occurred when a wagon of a freight train jumped off the rails for still unclear reasons, has resulted in extensive damage to the railway infrastructure.

According to reports from Deutsche Bahn and regional operator Metronom, the affected railway line is expected to remain closed until at least December 26, 2025, impacting holiday travel. Metronom, however, has indicated that restrictions could extend into early January due to the severity of the damage.

The derailment caused considerable damage to the rail network. Reports indicate that several hundred meters of concrete sleepers were destroyed, rails were bent, and signal masts were damaged. The primary impact of the track closure is on regional train services. The RE2 line, which operates between Hannover and Göttingen, is particularly affected. Trains originating from Hannover are now terminating in Nordstemmen, while those from Göttingen are ending in Banteln. To mitigate the disruption, a bus replacement service has been established between Banteln and Nordstemmen.

While regional traffic faces severe restrictions, the high-speed line for ICE trains between Hannover and Göttingen remains unaffected, with services running as scheduled.
