Freight Train Derailment Halts Rail Traffic Between Hannover and Göttingen Until After Christmas

Major Rail Disruption After Freight Train Derailment Near Elze

A freight train derailment on December 23, 2025, near Elze, in the Hildesheim district, has led to significant disruptions in rail traffic between Hannover Hauptbahnhof and Göttingen. The incident, which occurred when a wagon of a freight train jumped off the rails for still unclear reasons, has resulted in extensive damage to the railway infrastructure.

According to reports from Deutsche Bahn and regional operator Metronom, the affected railway line is expected to remain closed until at least December 26, 2025, impacting holiday travel. Metronom, however, has indicated that restrictions could extend into early January due to the severity of the damage.

Extensive Damage and Service Adjustments

The derailment caused considerable damage to the rail network. Reports indicate that several hundred meters of concrete sleepers were destroyed, rails were bent, and signal masts were damaged. One source also mentioned four kilometers of destroyed concrete sleepers and a torn-down power pole. Fortunately, there were no personal injuries, although one train driver reportedly suffered a shock. No hazardous materials were released during the incident.

The primary impact of the track closure is on regional train services. The RE2 line, which operates between Hannover and Göttingen, is particularly affected. Trains originating from Hannover are now terminating in Nordstemmen, while those from Göttingen are ending in Banteln. To mitigate the disruption, a bus replacement service has been established between Banteln and Nordstemmen.

Impact on Travelers and Ongoing Investigations

Travelers using these routes are advised to expect significantly longer journey times and to check for updated connection information via electronic systems before departure. While regional traffic faces severe restrictions, the high-speed line for ICE trains between Hannover and Göttingen remains unaffected, with services running as scheduled. Freight trains involved in the incident are being rerouted.

The cause of the freight train wagon derailing remains under investigation. Authorities are working to determine the exact circumstances that led to the incident. The extensive repair work required underscores the significant challenge posed by the derailment, especially during the busy Christmas travel period.

Good to know the high-speed ICE lines are still running normally.

While no hazardous materials were released, which is a major plus, the sheer scale of track destruction is alarming. This raises questions about maintenance and prevention on these crucial lines.

The prompt investigation is important for safety, yet the extensive damage suggests a significant underlying issue. Passengers are facing severe inconvenience during a critical travel period.
