SLB Awarded Major Aramco Contract
SLB, a global technology company, announced on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, that it has secured a five-year contract from Saudi Aramco, the state-owned integrated energy and chemicals company. The agreement positions SLB to provide critical stimulation and related services for Saudi Arabia's unconventional gas development program.
This contract is a component of a broader multi-billion-dollar initiative aimed at significantly expanding Saudi Arabia's domestic gas production capacity.
Scope of Services and Technological Advancements
Under the terms of the agreement, SLB will deliver a comprehensive suite of services designed to enhance the efficiency and recovery of unconventional gas reservoirs. These services include:
- Advanced stimulation techniques
- Well intervention solutions
- Frac automation technologies
- Digital solutions
Saudi Arabia's Strategic Energy Vision
The contract aligns with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 strategy, which seeks to diversify the Kingdom's energy portfolio and reduce its reliance on liquid fuels for power generation. By developing its substantial unconventional gas reserves, Saudi Arabia aims to meet rising domestic demand for lower-carbon energy options and free up crude oil for export.
Key unconventional gas fields in Saudi Arabia include Jafurah, which is the largest discovered to date, along with North Arabia and South Ghawar. The Jafurah project alone is expected to reach a production capacity of 2 billion cubic feet per day by 2030.
SLB's Commitment to Unconventional Resource Development
Steve Gassen, Executive Vice President of Geographies at SLB, emphasized the significance of the agreement, stating, 'This agreement is an important step forward in Aramco's efforts to diversify its energy portfolio in line with Vision 2030 and energy transition goals.' SLB's long-standing presence in Saudi Arabia and its expertise in deploying stimulation and digital technologies at scale in complex unconventional developments were cited as key factors in securing the award.
The collaboration underscores a commitment to unlocking the potential of Saudi Arabia's unconventional gas sector, which is considered a cornerstone of the Kingdom's strategy to support the global energy transition.

This move certainly frees up crude oil for export and aids Vision 2030 goals. But labeling it 'lower-carbon' needs context; it's still a significant source of greenhouse gases compared to true renewable alternatives.

Water pollution and seismic activity concerns ignored for profit. Shameful.

Greenwashing at its finest. We need renewables, not more gas.

Unconventional gas extraction brings severe environmental risks. This is a step backward.

Fracking is NOT 'lower-carbon' or a real energy transition. It's still fossil fuels!

It's good to see investment in advanced technologies to improve efficiency in resource extraction. Yet, the sheer scale of unconventional gas development raises serious questions about its sustainability and impact on local ecosystems.
