Greece, Cyprus, and Israel Bolster Cooperation at 10th Trilateral Summit in Jerusalem

Leaders Convene for 10th Trilateral Summit

On Monday, December 22, 2025, the leaders of Greece, Cyprus, and Israel held their 10th trilateral summit in Jerusalem. The high-level meeting brought together Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides. The summit aimed to strengthen their strategic partnership across various sectors, focusing on regional stability, defense, and energy cooperation.

Advancing Key Energy and Connectivity Projects

A central theme of the discussions was the advancement of significant energy and connectivity initiatives. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI), a project designed to link the electrical grids of the three countries via the world's longest and deepest underwater electricity cable, bridging Asia and Europe. This initiative is expected to position Greece as a crucial energy hub in Southern Europe, facilitating the flow of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the region.

Furthermore, the summit saw a strong push to move forward with the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). Prime Minister Netanyahu stated, 'We will advance IMEC… we think we have to put it into reality.' The IMEC corridor is envisioned as a combination of maritime routes, energy pipelines, and cable connectivity, with Cyprus, Greece, and Israel serving as its vital Mediterranean link, connecting Europe with the Middle East and beyond.

Enhanced Defense and Regional Security

The leaders agreed to deepen their security and defense cooperation, emphasizing counterterrorism efforts and the safeguarding of vital maritime routes and critical infrastructure. Discussions reportedly included the potential establishment of a joint rapid-response military force in the Eastern Mediterranean. As part of these efforts, the establishment of a Maritime Cybersecurity Directorate in Cyprus by 2026 was also welcomed.

Prime Minister Netanyahu underscored the partnership's role in confronting regional challenges, stating that 'The Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean are being tested by aggression, terrorism and instability.' He added that the trilateral cooperation 'provides strength, clarity and cooperation that will prevail over chaos.' The leaders also reaffirmed their support for the Abraham Accords and broader regional stability initiatives.

Commitment to a Stable Eastern Mediterranean

The summit highlighted the shared values and common interests that underpin the alliance, which has evolved over a decade from initial energy cooperation to a broader strategic alignment. The leaders expressed their determination to continue and deepen cooperation despite geopolitical challenges, aiming to foster integration, prosperity, and security throughout the Eastern Mediterranean.

It's good to see these nations strengthening ties and addressing shared threats like terrorism and cyber-security. But this alliance could be perceived as exclusionary, potentially exacerbating existing rivalries in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The aspiration to create a stable Eastern Mediterranean through shared values is positive. However, achieving genuine, lasting peace requires addressing root causes of conflict and engaging in dialogue with all parties, even those not currently aligned.

This alliance feels more like provocation than peace. What about inclusive diplomacy?

Finally, real progress on energy independence for Europe. GSI and IMEC are game-changers.
