Russia and Ukraine Conduct Large-Scale Exchange of Fallen Soldiers' Remains

Humanitarian Exchange Concluded

On Friday, December 19, 2025, Russia and Ukraine carried out a large-scale exchange of the remains of fallen soldiers, marking a continuation of humanitarian efforts amidst ongoing hostilities. This operation saw the repatriation of 1,003 Ukrainian servicemen's bodies from Russia, while Ukraine returned the remains of 26 Russian servicemen.

The exchange was confirmed by both sides. Russian presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky announced that Moscow had handed over the bodies of over 1,000 Ukrainian servicemen. Concurrently, Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War confirmed receiving the 1,003 Ukrainian bodies. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) played a crucial role in facilitating this sensitive transfer.

Framework from Istanbul Talks

This latest exchange is part of a series of repatriations conducted under agreements reached during peace talks held in Istanbul earlier in 2025. These negotiations, which occurred in May, June, and July, also led to major prisoner swaps and the drafting of memorandums outlining potential settlement positions. Such humanitarian exchanges remain one of the few consistent areas of cooperation between Moscow and Kyiv since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

Ongoing Repatriation Efforts

The process of exchanging fallen soldiers' remains has been ongoing, with a previous exchange reported in November. Ukrainian officials have previously voiced concerns regarding the condition of some remains transferred from Russia, noting that bodies are sometimes damaged in ways that complicate identification. Despite these challenges, both nations continue to engage in these operations, providing some measure of closure for the families of those killed in the conflict.

Images shared by Russian presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky on his Telegram channel depicted individuals in white hazmat suits gathered around refrigerated trucks during the exchange. Similarly, Ukraine's prisoner-of-war coordination center posted pictures showing large trucks and personnel in protective overalls examining bodies in white sacks.

It's positive that the Istanbul talks laid a framework for this, but it also underscores the failure to achieve broader peace. These are grim milestones, not signs of de-escalation.

Why are these exchanges even necessary? The war must end now.

The fact that these exchanges are one of the few consistent areas of cooperation is telling. It shows how deeply entrenched the animosity is, despite this small act of humanity.

A stark reminder of the horrific cost of this senseless war. Just awful.

This exchange highlights the brutal reality. No real peace, just temporary deals.

Respect for the fallen, regardless of side. This is the right thing to do.
