Resignation Announced Amidst Controversy
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, a prominent Member of Parliament for the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party in South Africa, officially resigned from her parliamentary position on Friday, November 28, 2025. The resignation, announced by the MK Party's national chairperson, Nathi Nhleko, in Durban, is effective immediately. This development follows a series of grave allegations linking Zuma-Sambudla to the recruitment of South African citizens to participate in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Allegations of Recruitment for Russian War Effort
The core reason behind Zuma-Sambudla's departure stems from accusations that she allegedly lured 17 South African men into fighting for Russia. Reports indicate that these individuals were purportedly deceived with promises of lucrative employment contracts or bodyguard training in Russia, only to find themselves deployed to the frontlines in Ukraine. The allegations gained significant traction after her half-sister, Nkosazana Zuma-Mncube, filed a criminal complaint against her, citing human trafficking and contraventions of the Prevention and Combating of Trafficking in Persons Act, as well as the Foreign Military Assistance Act. The Democratic Alliance (DA) also laid criminal charges against Zuma-Sambudla in connection with these claims.
Zuma-Sambudla Denies Involvement, Claims Deception
Despite the serious nature of the allegations, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla has vehemently denied any wrongdoing. She asserts that she herself was a 'victim of deception, misrepresentation and manipulation' by an individual named Blessing Khoza, whom she has accused of co-recruiting the men. Zuma-Sambudla stated that she believed the arrangement was for legitimate paramilitary training and even underwent a month of non-combat training in Russia. She has pledged her full cooperation with all ongoing investigations into the matter.
MK Party's Position and Government Intervention
The MK Party has distanced itself from the alleged recruitment scheme. Nathi Nhleko clarified that Zuma-Sambudla's resignation was voluntary and should not be interpreted as an admission of guilt. He emphasized that the party was not involved in luring any individuals to Russia and has committed to supporting the families of the affected men, as well as assisting in efforts to bring them back home safely. Former President Jacob Zuma, Duduzile's father and founder of the MK Party, was present during the press briefing where the resignation was announced. In response to the unfolding situation, President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the recruitment of these South African citizens, with the government actively working towards their safe return.
Broader Context and Ongoing Investigations
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, daughter of former President Jacob Zuma, joined the MK Party in 2023 and was sworn in as an MP in June 2024. She also served as South Africa's representative in the Pan-African Parliament since July 2024. This is not her first encounter with controversy; she has previously faced accusations of inciting violence during the 2021 unrest in South Africa. The current investigations by South African authorities, including the Hawks, are ongoing, aiming to uncover the full truth behind the alleged recruitment and ensure justice for the affected individuals.

The allegations are deeply disturbing, particularly for the families of the young men involved. Yet, we must wait for concrete evidence from the official investigations before reaching definitive conclusions about her guilt.

Sending South Africans to fight Russia's war? Unacceptable and a betrayal.

Absolutely disgusted by these allegations. Human trafficking for war is monstrous.

Resignation isn't enough. She needs to face the full force of the law.
Loubianka
She claims deception, and that needs to be properly investigated before judging.

MK Party is trying to save face. They knew what was happening.

The political maneuver of resigning might protect the party in the short term. But the underlying issue of South African citizens being lured into foreign conflicts demands a robust legal response, regardless of political affiliation.
